The students will write corresponding decade numbers to the represented
drawing.
The students will practice counting by tens aloud.
Materials:
Math whiteboards and marker bags
Student activity book (pgs 119-120)
Block Counters
Tail Feather Fun: Counting by Tens by Michael Dahl
Introduction:
Can you guys *flash me* 12? 17? 25? 30? 40?
* How do you know how many to flash on this side?
*I want the back row to stand and choose a whiteboard and then get a marker bag
from Mrs. Nestroyl and sit down. Middle row. Front row. *
Procedure:
Step 1: Have the students file through line and pick up a whiteboard and a
marker bag.
Step 2: Have the students draw a circle in each of the boxes in the first
column. (Model this for the class)
*Count the circles.
*How many are in this group?
Step 3: Write the number 10 under the first column.
*What does ten mean? (10 means 1 group of tens with zero ones left over)
Step 4: Underline the 1 to show that there is ONE group of tens
Step 5: Have the students draw circles in the next column and count the
circles. (Model this for the class.)
*How many circles are there TOTAL?
* How many tens are there now?
*So, what number means two tens?

Step 6: Continue steps 2-5 for the numbers to 100.

(Continue to write the decade number under each column!)
*How many tens do we have now?
*What number is ___ tens?
*Lets count the tens that we have so far!
Step 7: Point to each number on the grid in sequence and have the class say
the number and how many tens it has.
(Ill say the number and you say how many tens it has: 10 (1 ten) 20 (2 tens))
Step 8: Switch the approach and have the class say the number after you say
how many tens.
(Ill say how many tens and you say the number: 1 ten (10) 2 tens (20))
Step 9: Have the students divide their board into 4 sections. On the teachers
board, write a decade number in each quadrant. Have the students write how
many tens in the corresponding quadrant on their board.
(60: 60 is 6 tens) (40, 20, 90)
Step 10: Have the students compare their answers to their neighbor
(while seated)
Step 11: Have the students return their boards to the basket and sit at the
desks. (Please get out your math workbooks and open to page 119)
Step 12: Look at activity #1. Have the students count and write the number
of circles by tens.
*Remind me how many circles are in each group?
*Lets count the circles and write the answer together
Step 13: Look at #2. *If you can count tens, you can add tens!
*How many tens are before the plus sign?
*What happens if we add another ten?
*Lets write the equation to show what we did.
Step 14: Continue with the rest of the page.
Closure:
Ok, so today we learned?
Decade numbers & counting by tens
Evaluation:
The students will be evaluated by the answers written on their marker
boards, their responses when called upon, and the workbook answers they provide.
