The board was told that the First phases would ikely ‘nchude various mechanical projects as well as a design plan embers and City Couneil ded a joint mecting at the newly renovated East Salem Elementary Schoo! Tuesday Projects in the 2015 capital improvement plan as well as the other years include roofing replacement, heating and air conditioning work, building renovations, oor and window updates, classroom upgrades and similar projects. n addition, the school division has used capital reserve funds ttationally to replace buses every yer, supplement its technology bude, and replace mejor cafeteria equipment om a planned regular basis to even out future necessary outlays, Projects approved from $676,492 of unallocated capital reserve funding include new school vehicles, technical and computer upgrades, cafeter ‘equipment, band equipment, parking ot improvements and various general upkeep projects. Todd Clayton and Set. Mike Crawley of the Salem Police Department suramarizing a recent lock-down dill at Salem Iligh School. The report commended staff at Salem High for its response time during the dil, and the officers also presented the board with recommendations and considerations for improvement of safety procedures to bbe used atthe school in the event afa possible shooting threat, Inresponse tthe officers’ report, board members agreed that sefety ‘considerations should rank highly inte long-range capital improvement program at Salem High New grading program approved ‘The board also approved a new web-based grading program, JumpRope, which reportedly has th ability to measure individual standards ina four-point grading system, The pilot program wil allow tsachers to provide a score for each standard that was measured on each assignment and provides the option of scoring standards using a 4-1 grading guide as well asa 0-100 scoring sale. Pawel Nazarewicr, who teachers mathematics at Salem High School, plans to use the four-point grading guide wih his students asa eomponeat of the JlumpRope standards-based grade book. He belives that te four-point system focuses students on proficieney levels and leaning rather than focusing onthe rade {In addition, all students will eceive an official Salem City Schools report cand ‘with numerical or leter grades based on the board policy fr ther grade level In other action... Superintendent Dr. Alan Seibert presented an amended schoo! opening report, ‘with facts on non-resident students.
