Dear BAMS Parents & Caregivers,
We at Brooklyn Ascend Charter School take the safety and well-being of our scholars
very seriously. The purpose of this letter is to share specific information, as well as
inform you more generally about internet safety.
The internet can be an amazing educational tool when used with supervision. For the
first time in history, our children are a mouse-click away from exploring museums,
libraries, and universities. Many of us have access to the internet and social media from
our hand held devices. This access however does not come without concerns. There is an
emerging national consensus regarding the inappropriate and at times dangerous use of
the internet and social media by students. We ask for your support and vigilance in
assisting us as we work to protect our children from harm.
It is our belief that parents and guardians should be aware of and monitor childrens
internet activity, as well as all communications to and from their hand held devices. We
encourage you to talk with your son or daughter about the potential danger of the
internet and establish rules and guidelines to ensure your childs safety. Remind your
children that everything they post, like, or comment on becomes part of their
permanent online record. Brooklyn Ascend Charter School will continue to provide
internet security within our school while students are working in the computer lab as
well.

Quick Internet Safety Tips

Don't let your child have an internet accessible computer in his or her room.
Don't let your child have a webcam for ANY reason.
Do start a conversation with your child about internet safety.
Do know how to check your childrens internet history.
Do buy some kind of internet filtering program.
