What Is The Healthy Relationship Programme?

AspireNLP has been commissioned by Central Bedfordshire Local Authority and Bedford
NHS to work with local schools to improve school attendance and address poor school
performance. AspireNLP is a holistic, school based coaching and behavioural change
programme aimed at vulnerable pupils. It is designed to help 14-18 year olds fulfill their
potential by empowering them to make positive sustainable relationships - the most
important being the relationship they have with themselves. The programme comprises
of 8 workshops and 6 weeks 1-2-1 telephone coaching. We achieve measurable success by
using a range of coaching and behavioural techniques derived from:
-

Gestalt Therapy
Person-Centred Counselling
Cognitive Behavioural Approaches
Linguistics
Behaviourism
Hypnotherapy (trance states)

We have found that many of our pupils have a history of domestic abuse or come from
homes where they have witnessed domestic abuse. Research has shown an outcome of
this can be poor school attendance and poor educational achievement. The HRP focuses
on improving communication and building healthy relationships with their peers and
teachers. This in turn will raise their aspirations, improve their behaviour, and put them
on the right path to academic success, and improved emotional wellbeing.

Why Is The Programme Helpful?

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is just as important to attain as academic-based intelligence.
By being taught the right coping skills, and adopting the right success mindset, pupils
can fend off mental health problems, have a higher sense of self-worth, envisioning a
bright future for themselves both academically and personally.
Our 10-week holistic programme has seen an INCREASE in: School Attendance, Self
Esteem, Confidence, Aspirations, Participation in Positive Activities, Improved Mental
Health, Improved Teacher-Pupil Relationships, and Improved Diet and Exercise.
We have also seen a DECLINE in: Substance Abuse, Bullying, Fighting, Self-Harm, and
Risky Sexual Behaviour.
Our programmes focus on particularly sensitive issues and put emphasis on achieving a
seamless mind-body connection for the long-term; an element that sets us apart from
other young person's wellbeing programmes. Not only do we create evidenced,
measurable tailored programmes, we additionally help schools to meet their statutory
wellbeing duty whilst actively contributing to Ofsted requirements, and adhering to
National Child Wellbeing Measuremenets. Our location in schools also allows us to strike
at the heart of the problem, without singling pupils out.

How Does The Programme Work?

Schools identify up to 10 pupils of each gender who they feel would benefit from this
additional support and refer them to the programme. All paperwork to implement the
programme is provided including parental consent letters, risk referral forms and
student manuals. Most importantly we work with you to deliver programmes within
your timetable.
Every Behaviour Change Facilitator is DBS checked and works with gender specific
groups. We provide a confidential, safe space for pupils to open up about the root
causes of their behaviour and motivate them to make lasting changes in their lives. A
robust assessment of risk and wants is undertaken at the start, so each programme
is tailored to the needs and behaviour of each group.
Typically most of our Behaviour Change Facilitator come from Counselling/Therapeutic
backgrounds all have experience of working with challenging young people and have
personal experience of overcoming challenges in their childhoods.

way through the programme or host the programme once every 2 weeks.

Yes, you can we take baseline measurements in school attendance, participation in
positive activities, confidence, self esteem, aspirations and personal well-being at the

Testimonials
Former HRP Pupils On... Attitudes TO Women
"I realise my attitude was messed up Id never like anyone to treat my mum or
sister in a bad way but I treat other girls badly because I dont think its serious. I
didnt really think that my attitude was related to how I behave but it all makes
sense, When I think back to what I used to say I sound exactly like my father!"
"There are some girls that are easy and as boys we dont think much of them... the
programme made me think about what the girl was probably going through and how
I was taking advantage of someone who probably needed help. I dont want to think
of myself as someone who uses or takes advantage of girls."

On... Violence Vs Strength

"I thought being strong was knocking someone out, I learnt its not - its just violent
the programme taught me that you learn how to deal with problems from your
parents. My dads in prison for abusing my Mum, I dont want to be like my dad."
"I always used to lose my temper, I didnt think it was something I could control its
part of being a man. I still lose my temper but not as much anymore, Im learning to
use my words to solve arguments."

On... Unhealthy Relationships

"I never thought that liking strong men who could fight and protect me meant that
they would be more likely to be violent toward me."
"I thought good boys were boring before! I thought if I didnt have a boyfriend it
meant I wasnt popular or wasnt attractive it didnt matter what they did I was
scared of being on my own."
