5-4 The Human Genome

Genome A map that shows the location

of individual genes on every chromosome

of a person.

Human Genome Project - A project

where scientists are trying to map out all

the genes on all chromosomes in the
human body.

Originally, scientists estimated that we

have 100,000 genes on the 46

chromosomes in each of our cells.
In 1997, only 1,000 of those genes were

mapped.
In April, 2003, all of the genes in the

human body were mapped. The exact

number of genes was around 30,000.

Why would the Human Genome

project be helpful?
Scientists could tell us if we have a gene

responsible for a genetic disorder or illness.

They could help us prevent diseases from
occurring.

How could this project be a

disadvantage?
Expensive
Stressful

Employers might have tests done on new

workers to see if they might develop a
disease in the future. They might be fired as
a result.
