Date of Lesson: April 29, 2014
1. Purpose: Students will have an understanding of the life cycle of the butterfly (4 stages)
2. Vocabulary and Key Terms:
- Egg
- Caterpillar
- 4 stages of a butterfly
- Cocoon/ chrysalis

3. Skills:
a. Listening: The students will listen to the teacher read The Very Hungry Caterpillar
b. Comprehension: The students will understand the different stages of the butterfly.
4. Objectives: The students will be able to understand the life cycle of the butterfly and
what each stage is called and looks like.
Standards:
RL.1. 11.Make connections between self, text, and the world around them
Pre-Assessment: Students have learned about living and non-living animals. They also learned
what insects are the days before.
Lesson Plan Presentationa. Set- Induction: Students will be on the rug and be asked to remind the teacher what
insects are. The teacher will then introduce the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The
teacher will begin reading the book.
b. Procedure: The teacher will finish reading the book to the children.
-The teacher will ask the children where they see butterflies.
-The teacher will ask the children what they saw take place in the book (Example: the butterfly is
first the egg, then a caterpillar, and then shelters itself in a cocoon.
-The teacher will reintroduce the stages the butterfly goes through. The teacher will also use
proper language and words for the life cycle.
-Once the teacher feels like the students understand the cycle, the teacher will introduce the fun
activity!
-The teacher will tell the students that they will be making a butterfly life cycle craft plate.
-The teacher will show the students what the plate should like in the end.
-The teacher will then quickly tell the students what they will need to do. The teacher will also
show the students the materials and tell them what each look like
-The teacher will ask the students to retell the directions to the class.

-The teacher will send the students off to work the activity (material will already be set up on the
tables)
c. Closure: The students will go to their seats and do the plate activity.

Black marker
Beans
Three different types of pasta: Rotini pasta, Small shell pasta, Bowtie pasta
Paper labels of stages for students to glue on white paper plate
Glue stick

Follow-Up Activity: The teacher will show the class a few of their classmates finished
products. These plates will be hung up on a board

2. Evaluation Assessment: The teacher will make sure that the students are following the
directions by rotating around the room and making sure the students are doing everything
they were asked.
Differentiation: Students are mixed heterogeneously mixed during this activity. They will be
working at their assigned seats. Students who may need extra help are seated wit students who
can guide them.
