INTRODUCTION

What is Waste Heat?

Dumped heat that can still be reused

Value (quality) more important than quantity

Waste heat recovery saves fuel

SOURCE AND QUALITY

HEAT RECOVERY UNITS

1. Recuperator
2. Regenerators
3. Heat pipe exchanger
4. Thermal wheel

5. Heat pump
6. Economizer

TYPES OF HEAT EXCHANGER

1. Double pipe heat exchanger

2. Shell and tube heat exchanger

3. Plate exchanger
4. Plate and shell exchanger
5. Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger
6. Plate fin heat exchanger
7. Pillow plate heat exchanger
8. Fluid heat exchangers

SHELL AND TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER

1. Shell and tube heat exchangers consist of series of tube.
2. One set of these tubes contains the fluid that must be either heated
3. or cooled.

4. The second fluid runs over the tubes that are being heated or cooled
so that it can either provide the heat or absorb the heat required.
5. Set of tubes is called the tube bundle and can be made up of several
types of tubes.

SHELL AND TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER

ADVANTAGES

1. Less expensive as compared to Plate type coolers.

2. Can be used in systems with higher operating temperatures and
pressures
3. Pressure drop across a tube cooler is less.
4. Tube leaks are easily located and plugged since pressure test is
comparatively easy.
5. Tubular coolers in refrigeration system can act as receiver also.

LIMITATIONS

1. Heat transfer efficiency is less compared to plate type cooler

2. Cleaning and maintenance is difficult since a tube cooler
requires enough clearance at one end to remove the tube nest
3. Capacity of tube cooler cannot be increased.
4. Requires more space in comparison to plate coolers
