anEnglishshortstorywriter,poet,andnovelist.He
wrotetalesandpoemsofBritishsoldiersinIndiaand
storiesforchildren.HewasborninBombay,inthe
BombayPresidencyofBritishIndia,andwastakenby
hisfamilytoEnglandwhenhewasfiveyearsold.[2]

Kipling'sworksoffictionincludeTheJungleBook
(1894),Kim(1901),andmanyshortstories,including
"TheManWhoWouldBeKing"(1888).[3]Hispoems
include"Mandalay"(1890),"GungaDin"(1890),
"TheGodsoftheCopybookHeadings"(1919),"The
WhiteMan'sBurden"(1899),and"If"(1910).Heis
regardedasamajorinnovatorintheartoftheshort
story[4]hischildren'sbooksareenduringclassicsof
children'sliteratureandonecriticdescribedhiswork
asexhibiting"aversatileandluminousnarrative
gift".[5][6]
Kiplingwasoneofthemostpopularwritersin
England,inbothproseandverse,inthelate19thand
early20thcenturies.[4]HenryJamessaid:"Kipling
strikesmepersonallyasthemostcompletemanof
genius(asdistinctfromfineintelligence)thatIhave
everknown."[4]In1907,hewasawardedtheNobel
PrizeinLiterature,makinghimthefirstEnglish
languagewritertoreceivetheprize,anditsyoungest
recipienttodate.[7]Amongotherhonours,hewas
soundedoutfortheBritishPoetLaureateshipandon
severaloccasionsforaknighthood,allofwhichhe
declined.[8]
Kipling'ssubsequentreputationhaschanged
accordingtothepoliticalandsocialclimateofthe
age[9][10]andtheresultingcontrastingviewsabout
himcontinuedformuchofthe20thcentury.[11][12]
