Rudyard Kipling

 Born in Bombay on 30 Dec 1865, where his father John was professor of
Architectural Sculpture at the Bombay School of Art.
 His parents are new arrivals in India to help British Raj
 1871, Kipling is sent to school in Southsea, England
 April 1877, Kipling mother removes him from the Holloway’s home, due to
his mistreatment
 April 1877 Alice take him on extended vacation. Kipling later recoumts the
terrible time at the Holloeays’ in 1888 story “Baa Baa, Black Sheep”.
 Enrolls at the United Services College. Junauary 1878
 1881 Schoolboy lyrics published
 Oct 18, 1882 returns to India, get a job as assistant editor of the English
paper, The Civil and Military Gazette
 In 1886, Kipling publishes his first collection of verse, Departmental Ditties,
This publication launches his literary career, although he later becomes
best known for his short stories
 Kipplin publishes six collection of short stories 1888, Publish Plain Takes
from the Hills his work which explores the psychological and moral
problems of the Anglo-Indians and their relationship with the people they
had colonized. Also publish ‘Soldiers Three, The Story of the Gadsbys, In
Black and White, Wee Wee Willie Winkie and turn overs from ‘The Civil
and Military Gazette.
 Oct 1889 Kipling returns to England to literary acclaim. Meets American
Agent and publisher Wolcott Balestier, become kipling closest friend and
supporter
 1891 The Light that Failed, Letters of Marque and Life’s Hanicap are
published
 Jan 18, 1892 Kipling Marries Carrie Balestier.
 1893 publishes Many Inventions
 1894 The Jungle Book, 1895 The Second Jungle Book is published
 1896 The Seven Seas and Soldier Tales is published
 1897 After a violent argument with his in-laws, Rudyard and his wife move
back to England and settles on a country estate. Captains Courageous is
published
 1898 An Almanac of Twelve Sports, The Day’s Work and A Fleet in Being are
published
 Kipling’s daughter Josephine dies on 6 March 1899, Publishes From Sea to
Sea
 1900 Kipling Reader is published
 1901 Kim and War’s Brighter Side
