OVERVIEW OF THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Community College Visit Report

Georgia Gwinnett Community College is a public institution that was founded in 2005, and
opened its doors on August 18, 2006. Georgias Governor Sonny Perdue, cut the ceremonial
ribbon for the nations first public college founded in the 21st century, and the first public
institution created in Georgia in more than 100 years. Gwinnett is the largest county east of the
Mississippi River, and was lacking a community college, so the county purchased 160 acres of
land that was specifically designated for the development of a college campus.
Georgia Gwinnett College has ten academic and support buildings that consist of building A,
B, and C that are mainly used for classes and activities. There is also a Wellness Center
(Building F), and several student residence buildings. The newest building on campus include a
Library and Learning Center, a Student Center, and an Instructional Lab Facility (Building H1)
which is now incorporated into the Allied Health and Sciences building (Building H2).
Classrooms are easily accessible, as well as the college bookstore, which provide digital products
and services that are accessible to widest possible audience.
Georgia Gwinnett has taken the scary part out of admission and registration for new students.
All students meet with a faculty member either individually or in small groups. The faculty
member help with the initial registration, and introduce the web-based registration system called
Banner. This system is critical to student success at Georgia Gwinnett, students use this system
to register for courses, view holds on account, find a mentor, view schedule courses, view
unofficial transcripts, financial aid rewards and more. Another option for new students is Block
Scheduling, which takes the mystery out of selecting that first schedule, and has several benefits:

Simplifies the registration process

Ensures you are taking the right courses for your academic program
