Student Guide
Allow students to listen to teacher selected music and form their own interpretation of what the music means, and
how it makes them feel. Have students also recognize what insraments are being used in each musical selction.
Lesson will be projected on the smart board in a power point presentation, beginning with students on the
classroom carpet infront of the board and finishing with them at their respective tabels to finish the visual art
project for the lesson.
Students should respond to questionssuch as: How does this song make you feel (students should answer using
apropriate emotion adjectives), What do you picture when closing your eyes and listening to the song, What
instraments do you hear when listening to the song, and students should be able to creat visual art that matches
their description of how the musical selection makes them feel.
Transition students on the the big carpet to do a combinedmusic and art lesson. Put on some music first that the
students enjoy listening too and allow them to dance and express themselves with the music. Begin power point
presentation while explaining that we will listen to three different musical selections and identify what musical
instraments are in each selection and discuss how each selection makes us feel by reflecting and interpreting. Then
we will listen to a fourth selection, closing our eyes and picturing something that matches the way the music
sounds (colors, shapes, and images). After discussing the final selections musical instraments, emotions, and what
we pictured while listening, students will return to their respective tables where they will creat visual artwork of
the selection they just heard. When they have finished their visual art projects the teacher will pick two students to
share with their classmates what they have created using the emotion adjectives discussed earlier and also sharing
their interpretation of the selection. Students will help to clean up art materials and assemble back on the big
carpet to transition to the next activity.
Conclusion: The big idea for both the Art and Music section of this lesson are Critical Thinking and Reflection.
Students will listen to music selected by the teacher through links in the power point to www.teachertube.com and
will then discuss (after each of the three peices) what their interpretation of the selection is, including how it
makes them feel and what they think the music is about. Students will have a chance to come up to the smart
board and draw what they have explained and share with the class what they are feeling. Students will then creat
visual art from a fourth musical selection that they will listen to with their eyes closed envisioning something that
illustrates the song they have just heard. Students will include colors, shapes, and other visuals that are
appropriate for their emotions and the selection they listened too. Throughout the lesson students will also
identify different musical instraments used to create whatthey are hearing in each selection.
Additional Notes
Allow two students to share and provide time between each musical selection for
questions and responces. Also allow students to feel free to have their own
interprestions while being open minded to others interpretations of the music they
are hearing and the visual art they will see. After students tell what musical
instraments they hear in each peice be sure to go over those used on the slide
following each peice that reveals what instraments were in fact used.
