A Round Table session on The Geo-Strategic Dynamics of the Asia


Pacific Region
Islamabad - November 12, 2014: The Department of Strategic Studies, National
Defense University Islamabad organized a Round Table Session entitled, GeoStrategic Dynamics of the Asia Pacific Region from 10:00am to 1200pm. Two speakers
presented their perspective on issues with regard to Asia Pacific and South Asian
region. Director General Dan Leaf of Asian Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS)
spoke on the Geo-Strategic Dynamics of the Asian Pacific Region largely covering the
US and Chinese interests in the region along with Pakistans possible futuristic role in
terms of conflict resolution. Mr. Aqab Malik Assistant Professor presented on the US
drawdown from Afghanistan. The roundtable session was chaired by the Dean Faculty
of Faculty of Contemporary Studies (FCS) National Defense University. The session
was attended by the FCS relevant faculty, MSc, MPhil and PhD students.
The round table largely focused on the emerging dynamics of the Asian Pacific region in
terms of geo-political and economic parameters and the challenges this region
confronts when it comes to the rise of China and the US larger interest. Also, it is learnt
with a great deal of interest that the South Asian region is linked one way or the other
with the Asia Pacific Region and the role of Pakistan in this regard may not be ignored.
This session remained interesting and informative for most of new faculty and students
to enhance their understanding on the emerging issues and major powers dramatic shift
of their policy postures to Asian Pacific region. It also paved the ways for many MPhil
and PhD student to carry out research and craft standard thesis on this particular
region. It was encouraging to see that many students pose interesting and at times
difficult questions with regard to Asian Pacific region.
It is hoped that many such talks both from an academic and practitioner perspective
would be held in the future so that students have better and deeper understanding on
the Asian Pacific Region and enhance their intellectual horizon.
