Abstract
The purpose of this report is to define the scanning electron microscope and why we chose this type
of measuring equipment for our research and development. Throughout this report we will discuss
the individual steps we took to come to this conclusion. These steps include; Define what we are
expecting from a measuring tool, types of measuring tools that are offered, define specific aspects of
why we chose this measuring tool, discuss results, and give a recommendation. As a research team
we will be researching very small specimens such as; geothermic rocks, gold, silver or other
precious metals, on stage or platform. We will need a measuring tool that will be able to measure
features not seen by the naked eye. There are three different types of measuring equipment we have
to choose from. These are, a basic Optical Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope, and a
Spectrometer. The Light Microscope refracts light to a specimen that is really close to its lens. The
Scanning Electron Microscope uses an electron gun that scans across the surface and emits
electrons to make up a picture. Lastly, a spectrometer is a measuring tool that takes in light, breaks
it up into little pieces, and reconstructs it into a waveform for measurement. After evaluating each
equipment option our team would like to make a recommendation to purchase a Scanning Electron
Microscope for our research purposes.

Different Types of Measuring Tools for Organizational

Research
Introduction
On January 29, 2014 our Research and Development Department was created, in addition to the
Chemistry Department, in order to expand our research and development team. We were assigned
by the Department Manager to find the most logical measuring tool for our research, create a report,
and present it to the department head manager. We came together as a group and started to
discuss what we are expecting from a measuring tool, types of measuring tools, and specific
aspects of the measuring tool we chose and make a recommendation.
After conducting our research we concluded that the Scanning Electron Microscope was the best fit
for the type of research we will be performing. As a research group we will be studying elements
and geological items in depth such as geothermal rocks, gold, silver and other elements. The
Scanning Electron Microscope had a few more standard features than the other two measuring
tools; such as helping to understand and evaluate what these specimens consist of. The other
measuring items did not go into enough depth for us to use them for our research and develop
studies. However, each tool does have a few key features that may lead us to consider purchasing
either one of them in the future.
The breakdown of the report will consist of these four topics:
1. Expectation of Measuring Equipment
2. Types of Measuring Equipment
3. Results and Findings
4. Conclusion and Recommendations
Expectation of Measuring Equipment
As a research team we are required to conduct research inside and outside the laboratory. Outside
the lab we collect samples of geothermic rocks, gold, silver, and other precious metals for study in
our lab. Currently, our research department and lab are in the development stages and we looking
for a new tool to assist our research.
With the types of samples we collect, we need a tool that can analyze these specimens in such
depth that we are able to pick apart every piece. We would like to work on a nanometer scale, but
there are not very many types of equipment that are able to analyze on this scale. When working in
such a small scale we need something that has high enough resolution and has no distortion. We
would also like a tool that can display our specimens in a 3 dimensional image.

8 of 12
We are going encounter some limitations with our department still in the development stages. We
are very limited with how much money we are able to spend on new tools. Ideally, we would like to
find a measuring tool that is less expensive than the others. In addition, if we were to purchase a
new tool, we would have to consider the adequate training and\or staffing to operate it. These are
some of the limitations that are present, but may not be encountered.
Types of Measuring Equipment
Through Internet, books at the library, and emails we sent to other research and development
companies, we found three types of equipment that would best suit our needs. The three types are
an Optical Microscope, Spectrometer, and a Scanning Electron Microscope. Each of type of tool has
different key features that would be ideal for our research. Only one, however, would be the best
choice.
Optical Microscope

Figure 1

The first piece of equipment we evaluated is the basic Optical

Microscope. The basic function Optical Microscope is a tool
that enhances an image through a series of lenses. A light
source is used to illuminate the enhanced specimen. This
light source can be from a small light bulb to a LED. (1) An
optical microscope can enhance the image about 1000 times
its original size. With a light microscope we will be able to
view any kind of specimen living or deceased. Optical
microscopes are fairly inexpensive (price range from 100$ 1,000$) and can even be portable. Figure 1 shows basic
components and set up of an Optical Microscope.

Spectrometer
The second piece of equipment we evaluated for
purchase a Spectrometer. The basic function of a
Spectrometer is to take in light that passes through a
specimen, break up the light into the different
segments of the light spectrum, digitize the signal into
a wave form, and analyze the wave form read out on a
computer. (2) A typical specimen can be a solid, liquid
or a gas. Unlike the Optical Microscope this measuring
tool typically only measures mass of an object. This
would be the second most expensive piece of
equipment that is offered (price range from 1,000$ 20,000$). Figure 2 shows the basic function of a
spectrometer.

Scanning Electron Microscope

Figure 3

The last and most attractive option is the Scanning Electron

Microscope. A Scanning Electron Microscope uses electrons
produced from an electron gun that are emitted over a specimen.
(3) The specimen is placed in a chamber under high vacuum
which helps the majority of the electrons stay constant without
straying from the beam. A detector is inside the chamber, its
purpose is to pick up the back-scattered secondary elections and
form them into an image on a computer. A specimen that would
be ideal for a Scanning Electron Microscope is something that is
not alive, electrically conductive, and completely dry. A Scanning
Electron Microscope has the capability to enhance the image of
the specimen around 1-2 million times. It is also able to produce a
3 dimensional image. (3) This type of instrument is the most
expensive option we have researched (price range from 250,000$
- 1.0 Mil). Figure 3 shows the basic function of a Scanning
Electron Microscope.
Results and Findings
After evaluating all of our options we feel that the Scanning
Electron Microscope is the best option for two reasons. First, and
most importantly, the Scanning Electron Microscope has the
highest enhancement capabilities of researched tools. When
evaluating our samples we want to be able to understand every
part of the specimen, and with depth of focus of the Scanning
Electron Microscope we are able to do that. Secondly, the 3 dimensional image that the Scanning
Electron Microscope produces. Although the image is not in color (due to it being developed by
electrons), the 3 dimensional image still helps define features and textures. Below of the Conclusion
and Recommendation section are 3 images of what specimens look like under a Scanning Electron
Microscope.
We discussed with the manufacturer of the Scanning Electron Microscope and they provide training
classes on how to use and operate the measuring tool. The Scanning Electron Microscope does
require periodic maintenance that will need to be performed by a Scanning Electron Microscope
Technician. This periodic maintenance is provided by the manufacturer with the purchase price for 5
years, and can be extended if needed.

Conclusion and Recommendations
In conclusion we would like to recommend our Research and Development Department invest in the
Scanning Electron Microscope. Although it is the Scanning Electron Microscope is the most
expensive out of the three
options we feel it would best suit our needs for research and development. We hope this report has
given the department enough evidence that investing in this instrument would be a valuable step in
growing our department. The Scanning Electron Microscope will be a great asset to our research
team. We believe this because of the amazing specimen enhancement and 3 dimensional imaging.
In addition to our recommendation we would also like the research department to consider in the
future investing in an Optical Microscope and a Spectrometer. If we were to expand our field of
study, the other instruments may prove to be great assets. If you have any questions or comments
for our Research Department you may contact us through email scoles555@gmail.com or

Subject:

Organizational Culture

From my experience working in an industry with engineers and technicians, they have an excessive
amount of passion for what they do. The organizational structure of the company I studied shows
that as a company they come together and solve any issue, no matter how difficult the problem.
During my research I asked many questions, asked for many documents, and asked how day-to-day
interactions are performed. With IMFlash Technologies being a leader of a cutting edge technology
the majority of the information they have on site is confidential and proprietary. So, my responses
were very limited because of this. In order for them to stay on top of the industry they keep their
projects, ideas, work plans, and anything else confidential, until it is time to release this information.
IMFlash is run on 4 major core values; Integrity, Teamwork, Commitment and Execution. Each one of
these core values is what defines each employee and how they conduct work on a day-to-day basis.
IMFlash also (Insert Ideas Theory In there) This is why I believe IMFlash has become so successful
as a company.
My sample of writing was designed as an analytical report for a Department Manager and Purchasing
Department asking for an investment in a new research tool. This is the process I feel the company I
studied would go about researching and/or convincing the Department Manager and Purchasing
Department for an investment. The audience this report is intended for would be a manager or an
individual higher up in an organization. The format of the report was set up so that our steps of
research went in chronological order, in order to make it easy to follow. Engineers, technicians, and
other technical personal are data collectors. The reason I wrote the report step by step the way I
did, was so that they get the facts without having to search for them.
I feel that they way I organized, structured, and presented my findings in this report would succeed
in an engineering profession. I stated all of the facts clearly and precise to how I researched them.
Being able to read similar reports in my studied profession, I feel that this report shows a lot of key
similarities. In conclusion I would like to state that I really enjoyed studying my future profession and
hope to be able to write more of these reports in the future. Thank you for your time and if you have
any further questions or comments I can be reached though email at scoles555@gmail.com.
