Persuasive Writing #2:

Lord of the Flies chapters 1-7
Full Assignment:
Your assignment is to select one of the prompts written by you or a classmate (at the bottom of the
assignment sheet) and answer it/respond to it in three (3) full, academic, paragraphs.
In class:
1. Select quotes
2. Write an outline with topic sentences and quotes
Write an outline for how you are going to answer this question (this shows me you are using your
own brain to answer the question). You will not receive marks for this assignment if you do not
show Ms. Bergman your outline before leaving class today. The outline in this form will be the more
difficult part of the assignment.
Homework:
1. Write your paragraphs following your outline, using your quotes, and sticking to the format
in your literary analysis handout
Using your outline, all you have to do is piece everything together in full sentences, paying attention
to stylistic techniques, grammar/spelling/punctuation, and what type of command word with which
you are working. Your analysis is essentially complete already. Your paragraphs will serve as a short
essay, but you do not need an introduction paragraph or a conclusion.
Each paragraph will have:
- Topic sentence
- PEET: Point, Example (quote/summary/paraphrase), Explanation, Transitions
- Quotes cited in the following manner.
o Introduction to quote, quote (##).
Prompt options:
Using evidence and examples from Lord of the Flies . . .
1. Analyse the function(s) of the conch and how it has affected the boys
2. Analyse what the beast means to the boys in chapters 4-6, especially if it does not exist.
3. Assess the importance of Jack and Ralphs interactions/relationship to the functioning of the
rest of the group.
4. Contrast Simons and Jacks behaviour towards Ralphs leadership.
5. Describe how Piggy functions as a representation of adulthood/civilization on the island.
6. Discuss how the idea of a beast affected the children, both the biguns and the littluns.
7. Explain why the boys cannot be civilized.
8. Evaluate how effective Ralphs leadership is, focusing on how Ralph takes control of the
group of boys.
9. Evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the meetings that Ralph hosts.
