Learning Activity

Assessments/
Differentiation:

* Discuss perspective
* We talked about perspective in our past two art classes while
creating portraits. Does anyone remember what this meant?
What do you think perspective would be while creating a
landscape painting?
* Thinner tape goes in the background and thicker tape in the
foreground
* This helps to give the illusion of depth and space
* Ask: What is depth?
* Remind students about background, middle ground and
foreground

Differentiation

Learning Activity
#3

Watercolour Birch Trees:

1)
Show students photos of birch trees
2)
Discuss where the shadows, lights and colours hit the trees
3)
Start by drawing a wavy snow line towards the bottom of
water colour paper
4)
Then, using masking tape, tape down some trees making
sure to press the edges of the tape with scissors
5)
To reduce the tapes stickiness, so it peels off the paper
without ripping, have the students stick the tape to their clothing
first, to take away the excess stickiness.
6)
For any tape that is in the snow, students need to outline
lightly with pencil otherwise they disappear when the tape comes
off
7)
Test out shadow colours (Ask what these would be: blues,
grays, purples, etc) on scrap paper
8)
Paint shadows going in a straight diagonal line going left or
( 40 min )
right off of the bottom of the tree and onto the snow. These are
the cast shadows
9)
Paint the sky however fitting, could be sunsets, sunrises,
night sky, blue sky, etc
10)
Blend colours using wet on wet techniques, mixing with a
wide flat brush (practice on scrap paper first)
11)
Let dry (can work on snowflakes here)
12)
Can sprinkle with salt while still wet, creates texture
13)
Slowly and carefully, peel off tape
14)
Paint a light gray shadow on the same side of your tree as on
the direction of the cast shadows
15)
Using black marker, draw curved markings on the tree to
create the birch bark
16)
Make falling snow by dipping the end of a brush in white
tempera and dabbing all over the sky
* We will complete this entire process step by step, together
* Students are engaged throughout process
* Students are following along step by step
* Students are completing self checklist
* While waiting for paint to dry before peeling off tape, as well as
if students finish early, provide paper for them to cut out paper
snowflakes for the bulletin board in the classroom
* Quickly review how to do this, step by step in a demo
Closure

Consolidation of
Learning

Time

Today we carried over the concept of perspective, we just

learned how to apply it to a landscape rather then a portrait. We
learned how to create depth in a picture using scale and the
different grounds.
