(Scene opens in the Boys and Girls Club at the check-out desk.
It is Friday evening in late fall. It is unusually quiet as it
is just before closing and there is only child left to be picked
up. Libby is waiting for her son Andy to get his things and is
talking with Olivia who is currently working check- out at the

desk. Libby looks tired, and everything about her, including her
outfit, appears as if they have been working too much.)

Olivia:
Libby:

You look exhausted Libby, another long week?

Yeah, Ive been working late at the office and trying
to get as much overtime as I can.

Olivia:

How are you able to do that week after week? Every

Friday, youve done more work than the last one but it
always seems like you have more to give.

Libby:

(with an exhausted smile) I just keep remembering that

Im doing it for Andy. I would do anything for him and
I really want to be able to give him opportunities
that I didnt. I want him to get the best education he
can so he doesnt end up working as(gestures to self)
a secretary or something. I want him to be able to get
a job he loves. Dont get me wrong, my boss is
wonderful and its not like I

hate it there, its

just not what I envisioned-you know? (Olivia nods) I

wanted something bigger and I want Andy to be able to
have the ability to have more opportunities than I
did.
(Andy runs to the desk from the back and runs into Libby for a
hug, nearly knocking her over)
Andy:
Libby:

Mom!
(laughs, appears less stressed now that he is here)
Hey Sweetie, how was your day?

Andy:

(chattering so fast as to be almost incomprehensible)

It was great! Ms. Jones said that I am doing really
well at multiplication

and in art we started to make

these masks that we might use later..

(He continues and Libby speaks over him)
Libby:

Bye Olivia, have a good weekend! Sorry for making you

stay later than you needed to!

Olivia:

Its no problem. I will see you next week!

(As Libby and Andy leave, Olivia glances worriedly at the clock.
She pulls out her phone and dials a number.)
Hello, my name is Olivia Blaire; I was wondering if
you had my test results for me. (She pauses, listening
to the voice on the other end and then gasps) Are you
sure? (Pauses briefly) Okay, thank you. You have a
nice evening too. Goodbye. (She hangs up)
(Olivia sinks to the ground with her knees to her chest, her
face buried in her hands. Her shoulders shake as she cries for a
moment. She then stands up and begins to pace)
It cant be right; it must be a false positive or
something. And Adrianoh no. Adrian. (She stops and
rubs her arm reflexively) What am I going to do? I
should probably just (she trails off and stops,
looking into the distance. Her face hardens and looks
more determined. She takes a deep breath trying to
calm herself) Okay, how do I do this. (practicing
talking to him/imagining it) Adrian. Theres
something I wanted to tell youno, (sound of
exasperation) I need to talk to you about

something. Adrian, we need to talk Im pregnant. No.

Adrian, please, dont be angry, butno. No, no, what
am I going to say?
Million Reasons Why: Olivia
OH I CAN HEAR HIM, WHEN I GET HOME
HELL SMILE THAT SMILE THATS ONLY THERE WHEN WERE ALONE.
COME HERE, SUGAR SWEET, WHYNT YOU WIPE YOUR ANGEL FEET
ONE THE MAT AND STAY A WHILE?
SIT DOWN, GET A BEER, BRING THE BOTTLE OVER HERE,
GLASSY EYES AND SERPENT SMILE.
WHY DONT I LEAVE HIM? IS LOVE NOW A CRIME?
IM IN LOVE AND AFRAID OF HIM, BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.
TO HURT HIM, TO LEAVE HIM, LOVE TURNS A BLIND EYE,
WHAT WOULD IT TAKE? A MILLION REASONS WHY.
IM NOT AFRAID; MY CHOICE IS MADE.
IVE FOUND A LIGHT IN DARKNESS
IF YOU SEE ADRIAN, TELL HIM LIVIAS NOT COMING BACK TONIGHT
IM NOT GIVING UP TONIGHT
IM NOT GIVING UP WITHOUT A FIGHT
AND ILL FIGHT, YOU WATCH, UNTIL THE DAY THAT I DIE.
ILL BE THE BEST MOTHER YOU COULD HAVE,
I WILL ALWAYS BE HERE FOR YOU, YOU ARE MY MILLION REASONS WHY.

(She pauses as she suddenly remembers something)

Libby:

(offstage) Im doing it for Andy; I would do anything

for him.

Olivia:

(echoes faintly) Anything.(she walks purposefully

offstage)
(Blackout)

SCENE TWO

(Scene opens with Andy in bed. Libby is sitting on the edge of

the bed to read him a bedtime story.)
Andy:

Mommy, why are you working all the time? I miss you.
We dont get to play as much and it doesnt feel like
I get to see you anymore.

Libby:

I know sweetie and Im sorry. Ive been working a lot

lately so that I can provide for you better.

Andy:

But youre the best Mommy in the whole wide world, why
would you need to do better?

Libby:

(chuckles) Thanks Andy. Now how about a story? Want to

hear The Little Red Hen?

Andy:

Yeah!

Libby:

Once upon a time on a farm there lived a pig, a cat, a

dog and a little red hen. The Little Red Hen was the
one who worked the hardest on the farm and the other
animals were all lazy. One day the Little Red Hen
found some wheat seeds. She went to each of the other
animals and asked if they would help her plant the
seeds but they all said no. So the Little Red hen said
Fine I will plan them myself and planted and cared
for the seeds until they grew into wheat. When the
wheat had turned golden and ripe, the Little Red Hen
went and asked the other animals Will you help me
harvest the wheat?. They all said no so the Little
Red Hen said Fine Ill do it myself and harvested
all the wheat. The wheat needed to be milled into
flour so the Little Red Hen asked the other animals if
they would help her. They all said no so she said
Fine Ill do it myself and milled the flour. The

Little Red Hen went into the kitchen and used the
flour to make a little loaf of bread. As the bread
finished baking, the other animals came and asked if
they could have some of the delicious smelling bread.
The Little Red Hen asked if they had helped her plant
the seeds, harvest the wheat or mill the flour. All
the animals said no they hadnt. The Little Red Hen
said You are right, I did all the work all by myself
so I will eat the bread all by myself. And she did.
The end.
Andy:

I really like that story Mommy. (sleepily) You kind of

remind me of the Little Red Hen- you work a lot and
cook really good food.

Libby:

(laughs) Thank you Andy. I love you and remember that

if you do your best, good things will happen to you.
The Best Will Come Back To You: Andy/Libby
(with Andy)
GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT,
AND ALL THOSE WHO ARE THANKFUL FOR WHAT THEYVE GOT
AND WEVE GOT A LOT TO BE THANKFUL FOR, YOU AND ME.

I MIGHT NOT KNOW MUCH, BUT I KNOW THIS MUCH TO BE TRUE:

IF YOU GIVE THE WORLD YOUR BEST, THE BEST WILL COME BACK TO YOU.
(Andy falls asleep. She sings softly,
almost thinking to herself.)
GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT,
AND ALL THOSE WHO ARE THANKFUL FOR WHAT THEYVE GOT
AND WEVE GOT A LOT TO BE THANKFUL FOR, YOU AND ME.

BUT WAIT AND SEE; ITLL GET EVEN BETTER.

I MIGHT NOT KNOW MUCH, BUT I KNOW THIS MUCH TO BE TRUE:
IF YOU GIVE THE WORLD YOUR BEST, THE BEST WILL COME BACK TO YOU.
(spoken) Goodnight, Andy.

SCENE THREE
[Scene opens in a battered womens shelter. Olivia enters
carrying an overnight bag. She has a new black eye and
is looking around insecurely. One of the women takes
pity on her and gestures her over. They start to talk,
however none of it is audible. The womans daughter,
Sophie, enters and her mother attempts to wave her
over but she ignores her mother and keeps walking.
Olivia stands up and walks over to Sophie]
Olivia: That was kind of rude, dont you think?
Sophie: (looks at Olivia skeptically) Im not in the mood for a
lecture right now, from my mother or some stranger who
thinks she can fix my life even though hers is clearly
just as screwed up!
Olivia: (defensively) Fine, you do whatever you want; Im just
saying that your mother loves you and is extremely
proud of you. She wouldnt stop bragging about you
over there.
Sophie: (curiously, slightly less hostile) Really? She was?
Olivia: Yes, she kept saying how smart and talented you are;
shes just worried that you might not be hanging out
with the best people.
Sophie: (immediately shuts down) Oh Yeah?! Well she needs to but
out of my life and stop trying to control who I am
friends with, I know what is best for me and I can
choose my own friends! (She storms off. Olivia looks
after her for a second and then rejoins the group of
women who had been watching the exchange)

SCENE FOUR
[Scene opens in the High School guidance counselors office.
Sophie is sitting in a chair, swinging her legs
aimlessly. Dave enters.]
Dave:

Hi Sophie, how are you today?

Sophie:

Im good. How are you Dave?

Dave:

Sophie, Ive told you a hundred times, I dont care if

you are in my office practically every week; you still
need to call me Mr. Parker. I am fine though.

Sophie:

(sarcastically) Yes Mr. Parker.

Dave:

So Sophie, do you know why you are here?

Sophie:

I am a disruption to the class, a smart aleck, I

distract the other students, me and my no good
hooligan friends cause problems in class, blah,
blah, blah, blah, blah.

Dave:

Actually no. (Sophie looks surprised)You are here to

talk about college. Are you planning on applying?

Sophie:

(scoffs) do you think that my family has the money for

college?

Dave:

There are scholarships and financial aid and other

ways to make it so that you can go to college if you
want to Sophie, thats the real question: do you want
to go to college?

Sophie:

(trying to brush it off) Im not really the college

type.

Dave:

(skeptically) Really? Because you are very smart

Sophie, you test high and do well in classwhen you
are trying that is.

Sophie:

(abruptly) I have to get back to class so I dont miss

too much.

Dave:

Alright. But remember that if you ever want to talk,

that I am here and if you do decide you want to go to
college, I will help you in any way I can to find
scholarships and anything else that will help you.

Sophie:

Ok. (tries to make it into jibe but it comes out halfhearted) Bye Dave.

Dave:

Bye Sophie.

(she exits)

SCENE FIVE
[Olivia and Sophie talking at the shelter. They have already
started a conversation.]
Olivia:

Not that Im complaining or anything, but why are you

talking to me about this? You seemed pretty against
talking to me at all earlier.

Sophie:

I dont know. It just seems like you arent the kind

of person who would judge, make me do anything if I
didnt want to or share this and you have to be a good
listener- youve been listening to my mother long
enough.

Olivia: (laughs)So do you want to go to college?

Sophie:

I dont know. I dont think I would fit in or do well

there. And have you seen how much college costs?! We
dont exactly have that kind of money.

Olivia:

There are always scholarships, and you are definitely

smart enough to get some of the merit based ones and
you would also qualify for some of the need-based
ones. As for fitting in, you would be fine and would
do wonderfully anywhere you went. What do you think
you would study?

Sophie:

Ive always liked science, especially space. I just

think it is so cool how the stars we see every night
is actually light that is millions of years old and
could be coming from stars that dont even exist
anymore.

Olivia:

See, you would fit in fine at college, especially with

other people who love space too.

Sophie:

Yeah I guess youre right.

Olivia:

So if you do want to get into college, especially a

good one for astronomy, you need to take a lot of
science classes and get really good grades. And I know
that you dont want to hear this Sophie, but the
people you have been hanging around with are not
really going to be helpful to you, especially if you
want to get into college.

Sophie: (sighs) I know. I never was really that close with any
of them. After my mom and I left my dad and came here,
it kind of felt like that was the only thing I could
do, like they were the only ones who would understand
because a lot of them know what its like. But they
really dont; we dont really have anything in common.
(she sighs again) I dont really know how to leave
them though.
Olivia:

The choice is up to you. You can try to do it

gradually if you want. I just want you to do what
feels best for you and will help you accomplish your
goals. I have to go to work now but I am really glad
that you talked to me about this. (she leaves)

Constellations: Sophie
SOPHIE.
THERE, IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, YOU CAN JUST SEE THE NORTHERN STAR.

DOESNT MATTER HOW LOST YOU ARE, THAT BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT WILL GUIDE
YOU HOME.
IVE BEEN LOST AND WANDERING,
BUT MAYBE NOW ITS TIME TO CHANGE MY COURSE AND RE-CHART MY LIFE
AND IT FEELS LIKE IVE BEEN WAITING MY WHOLE LIFE FOR THIS MOMENT,
THERES A MURMUR INSIDE, BUT I DONT KNOW
ALL MY LIFE HAS BEEN A CONSTELLATION,
I COULD SEE WHERE I WAS MEANT TO GO. BUT NOW, I DONT KNOW.
THE STARS ARE SHIFTING.
I CAN FEEL THE TIDES CHANGE WITH THE EARTHS ROTATION,
AND MY SITUATION WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
ITS BEEN A HARD TIME, AND IVE PUSHED AWAY THOSE CLOSE TO ME, I KNOW
THAT.
BUT WHAT POINT IS THERE TO CHANGE WHEN THE AURORA BOREALIS FADES TO
GREY?
I KNOW THAT IVE BEEN WAITING ALL MY LIFE FOR THIS MOMENT,
FATE IS CALLING MY NAME THROUGH THE WIND AND SNOW
THERES NO TURNING BACK TO THE LIFE THAT I HAD,
BEFORE MY EYES WERE SHUT TIGHT, BUT NOW I SEE:
THE UNIVERSE IS WORKING THROUGH ME.
I THINK ITS TIME I CHART MY OWN CONSTELLATION,
MAKE A NEW MAP, AND GO, GO, GO.

(she exits)

SCENE SIX
[Several weeks later. Dave stops Sophie in the hallway to talk]
Dave:

Hi Sophie. How is everything going?

Sophie: Hey Dav-(he gives her a look) Mr. Parker, Im good, How
is everything going with you?
Dave: Im fine. I havent seen you recently and just wanted to
see if anything happened. Your teachers have reported
that you have been behaving much better in your
classes and your grades have improved dramatically.
(Sophie looks embarrassed and proud) Im proud of you,
I knew that you were able to do much more than you had
been doing before. Im just wondering, What caused
this change?
Sophie:

I talked witha friend and she helped me to see that I

really wanted to go to college and she helped me to
see what I need to do to be able to do that. Ive been
meaning to talk to you actually, would you still be
able to help me with scholarships and financial aid?

Dave:

Im so glad and Im happy that you are working toward

something that you clearly really want to do. I would
be happy to help you find scholarships and answer and
questions you may have about financial aid. Im just
wondering- and its okay if you arent sure yet- but
do you know what you might want to study?

Sophie:

I really want to study a science and I am thinking

about astronomy. Ive always really like space.

Dave:

Thats great! Have you looked into any schools yet?

Sophie:

Ive done a little looking and Orin College looks

good. Its pretty close, their astronomy program is
great and from what I can tell, they give a lot of
financial aid.

Dave:

Thats so great Sophie; Im really happy for you!

Sophie:

Its been good talking to you, but I really should get

to class.

Dave:

Alright. See you later Sophie.

Sophie:

(smiling mischievously) See you later Dave. (she

exits)

SCENE SEVEN
[Dave and his wife are sitting at a table for dinner. They are
quiet and all that can be heard is the clinking of
silverware]
Dave:

(breaking the silence) So I talked with the student

who had been falling in with the wrong crowd today.

Daves wife: Really?

Dave:

Yes, shes really made a change to her life; she is

working harder in class and she wants to go to college
to study astronomy.

Daves Wife: (sensing there is more) Thats good.

Dave:

(pauses) I think I want to try to call Isaac.

Daves Wife:

Really? Im glad that you want to call him. You

know that I would support in anything but I was really

sad that you two stopped talking all those years agoyou are brothers after all.
Dave:

Yeah. To be honest, I dont even remember what we

fought about. I was just listening to the student and
while she was talking about space and how she wants to
study astronomy, all I could hear was Isaac and how he
would talk about those same things when we were
younger. It made me realize how much I miss having him
in my life and I really dont want us to never talk
over some stupid fight we had years ago over something
that I cant even remember.

Daves wife: Im glad that you are going to reconnect with him.
You two were so close before you fought and Im glad

to see that you are going to try to restart that

relationship with him. When were you thinking of
calling him?
Dave:

I wasnt really sure, maybe tomorrow during my lunch

break.

Daves Wife: That sounds like a good idea.

SCENE EIGHT
[In the shelter. Olivia is repacking her overnight bag. Sophie
is sitting on the bed next to her and they are
talking)
Sophie:

Im glad that you found an apartment and everything

Olivia but Im going to miss you when you leave.

Olivia:

I will miss you too but maybe we can meet up for

coffee sometimes- if you arent too busy at Orin that
is!

Sophie:

(giggle) Yeah, I cant believe that I got in and that

I get free tuition and the rest of the scholarships
that you and Mr. Parker helped me find and apply for
should cover the rest of it. I cant wait to go!

Olivia:

Im so excited for you.

Sophie:

Yeah and I cant wait to get out of here too.

Olivia:

Has your mother found a place yet?

Sophie:

Shes seen a few places that might work so Im hoping

she will choose one soon.

Olivia:

How are you and your mom doing?

Sophie:

Better. We are arguing a lot less, which might have

something to do with my grades and that Ive stopped
hanging out with my old friends.

Olivia:

How did that go? Were they mad or anything?

Sophie:

To be honest, it wasnt as bad as I thought it would

be. I was just kinda gradual about it and we werent

all that close anyway so I guess they didnt really

care all that much.
Olivia:

Thats good. Im so glad that everything is working

out for you.

Sophie:

It seems like everything is going to work out. I am

going to miss you though, you helped me a lot.

(they hug)
Olivia:

Im going to miss you too but I have no doubt that you

are going to grow up to be an amazing person and you
will do so much with your life.

SCENE NINE
[Daves office, during his lunch break. He picks up his phone to
and calls Isaac who is seen on the opposite end of the
stage.]
Isaac:

Hello.

Dave:

Hi, Isaac? Its meDave.

Isaac:

Oh. Hihow are you?

Dave:

Im good. How are you?

Isaac:

Im good too.

Dave:

Thats goodyeah.

(awkward pause)
Isaac:

So is there any reason that you called me or?

Dave:

There is actually I called because yesterday one of

the students that I am a guidance counselor for made
me think of you and I realized that I dont want us to
be separated by some stupid fight that I cant even
remember how it started.

Isaac:

To tell you the truth, I dont remember either and

Ive missed you.

Dave:

Ive missed you too. Its strange to not talk to my

little brother.

Isaac:

I havent liked it either, but Im happy that you

reached out and we are talking now.(trying to change
the subject to something a little less awkward) So you
said that a student made you think of me?

Dave:

Yeah, She wants to go to college to study astronomy- I

think she is going to go to Orin College.

Isaac:

Thats a great school for that kind of major; she will

really enjoy it there.

Dave:

Im sure she will too. She was starting to go down a

bad path and hanging out with the wrong people and now
she is working really hard to turn her life around so
that she can go to Orin- she is so passionate about it
that it is amazing to hear. She was talking about
space and how excited she was to be able to study it
and all I could hear was when you would talk like that
when we were younger. Remember how when we were kids,
you would always make me play astronaut with you?

Isaac:

(chuckles) Of course! But you would usually try and

have aliens eat me at some point so I figure that its
about even.

(Dave laughs)
To Be Your Brother Again: David and Isaac
IVE MISSED YOU - WELL I GUESS ITS TRUE THAT WHEN IT COMES TO
YOU I WISH WED SPENT MORE TIME TOGETHER, WED GONE
BACK FISHING ON THE LAKE AND TAKEN ALL THE CHANCES
WED HAD TO RUN AND PLAY.
IVE MISSED YOU TOO WELL SUFFICE TO SAY IF I COULD GO BACK TO
THAT DAY ID TAKE BACK EVERYTHING I SAID. I DIDNT
MEAN A WORD AND I DIDNT KNOW ITD HURT YOU THAT WAY.
SURE, WHEN IT COMES TO IT, I BLEW IT AND I UNDERSTAND IF YOURE
MAD

BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, I KNEW IT COULDNT ALWAYS STAY BAD
BETWEEN US; WHAT I MEAN IS THAT ID
I THINK ID LIKE TO BE FRIENDS, LET THIS NOT BE WHERE IT ENDS
AND I WOULD LIKE IT IF AND WHEN I COULD BE YOUR BROTHER AGAIN.
SURE WHEN THE FACTS ARE CUED UP I SCREWED UP. BROTHERS ARE
MORE THAN THE GIGS THEYRE IN PLAYING.
BUT WHEN YOU LOOK RIGHT AT IT WEVE HAD IT IN US TO FIX IT
SINCE IT STARTED DECAYING; WHAT IM SAYING IS THAT I
I THINK ID LIKE TO BE FRIENDS, LET THIS NOT BE WHERE IT ENDS
AND I WOULD LIKE IT IF AND WHEN I COULD BE YOUR BROTHER AGAIN.
YES I WILL LOVE IT IF AND WHEN I CAN BE YOUR BROTHER AGAIN.

(School bell is heard, Dave checks his watch)

Dave:

Dang, thats the end of my break. I have to go now. Do

you want to talk later- maybe tonight?

Isaac:

That sounds good to me.

Dave:

Great. It was good talking to you.

Isaac:

It was good talking to you too.

Dave:

Talk to you later.

Isaac:

Yeah, Ill talk to you tonight.

(They hang up and Dave exits. Isaac now the sole focus)
(aside)

I cant believe that he actually called meits been

so longbut that doesnt matter now, we are going to work things
out. That student he mentioned, it sounds like she and I would
get along pretty well- with the whole space thing and all. Its
amazing that she is working so hard at such a young age, she is
really going to go far in the working world. Actually she kind
of reminds me of my secretary
(he exits)

SCENE TEN
[Libbys work near the end of the work day, it is a Friday. She
looks tired but excited to be able to see Andy again.
She is starting to pack up her things to leave when
Isaac walks in]
Libby:

Oh. Mr. Parker, How are you sir?

Isaac:

Ive told you to call me Isaac Libby and I am fine,

thanks for asking. How are you?

Libby:

I was just getting ready to leave to pick up Andy.

Isaac:

Ok, I wont keep you long then. I just wanted to let

you know that I have noticed all your hard work lately
and I know that you have a young son that you are
providing for so I want to give you a raise as my way
of showing my appreciation for all your hard work.
ISAAC. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT, LIBBY,
AND THOSE WHO DESERVE IT, AND THOSE WHO DREAM.

IVE GOT A LOT TO BE GRATEFUL FOR WITH YOU ON MY TEAM.

I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT YOUR LIFE, BUT ID LIKE TO DO THIS MUCH
FOR YOU
ID LIKE TO GIVE YOU THE RAISE YOUVE EARNED, GIVE CREDIT WHERE
CREDIT IS DUE;
BECAUSE WHEN YOU GIVE THE WORLD YOUR BEST, THE BEST COMES BACK
TO YOU.
(Libby appears to be holding back tears)

Libby:

Thank you so much Mr.Par-Isaac, this means so much to

me, you dont even understand.

Isaac:

I think I do, I have recently been reminded about the

importance of family. Now go on and pick up your son.

Libby:

Thank you so much again. Have a good weekend.

Isaac:

You too Libby.

(she exits)

SCENE ELEVEN
[The boys and girls club at check out. Olivia is working at the
desk again. Libby is talking to Andy]
Libby:

I have some very exciting news sweetie.

Andy:

What?

Libby:

My boss just gave me a raise, that means that I get

more money when I work and so I dont have to do all
the extra hours I have been working and I can spend
more time with you!

Andy:

(hugs Libby) Yay! We can do so many things together

now.

(He drags Libby offstage while listing activities the two could
do together. Libby barely manages to wave goodbye to
Olivia. Everyone re-enters the stage and stand in
groups of Libby and Andy, Olivia, Dave and Isaac.)

Finale: One Small Choice
