Advisor: Lisa Breslin
Estimated Total Cost of Project: $37160
Griswold-Zepp Budget: $3,000
Project Description:
The Marching Terrors Drumline is an effort by the students of McDaniel College
who either have participated in Marching Band, Drumline or Instrumental Music
in high school or who would like to start and support the school in performance
and outreach. The Drumline would consist of students with various instrumental
backgrounds trained in marching percussion technique and performance styles
by an area instrumental educator or McDaniel Faculty member, and these
students would rehearse twice to three times weekly to perform at home games,
open houses, local parades, and outreach at the Boys and Girls Club. Another
important note is that the Drumline would be the first step toward a full
marching band, which is a possibility that would greatly reinvigorate McDaniel
Colleges school spirit but which would require more time and funding to
organize.
Needs to be Addressed:
McDaniel College School Spirit
It came to our attention during Homecoming Weekend that school spirit at
McDaniel College could benefit from some help. We believe that a drumline
would drastically increase student support, enthusiasm, and excitement at
McDaniel, and that this support, enthusiasm, and excitement may even indirectly
help bring about more athletic success, applicant interest, and alumni
excitement.
McDaniel College Instrumental Music and Student Life
While McDaniel College currently does have a robust and exciting music
department, marching band is an outlet for musical expression that many
students coming to McDaniel from schools with a marching program express a
longing for. These students would appreciate a wider variety of instrumental
activities in which they could participate during their time at McDaniel College as
well as an ability to continue their previous learning experiences.
Community Outreach for the Arts

Creative expression, especially in musical forms, is not easily accessible or

encouraged among school-aged children. Many cannot afford instruments or
instruction, and others may not be given the support that musical learning would
require at home. For this reason, our drumline would make frequent visits to
local elementary schools and even occasionally provide percussion instruction
and musical activities at the local Boys and Girls Club.
Setting for the Project:
When: Summer 2015
Locations for Rehearsal
Potential locations for rehearsal include Gill Stadium and the surrounding
parking lot, or, in the case of rain, Gill Gym or Levine 201. During the summer of
2015, possible locations for drumline camp instruction, rehearsal, and board may
also include residence halls, dining areas, and all of the same amenities provided
to McDaniel athletes benefitting from Early Move-In.
Venues and Opportunities for Performance
Boys and Girls Club
Local Parades: e.x., Westminster Halloween, Hanover Halloween, McDaniel
Homecoming, FallFest
Local Elementary Schools: Robert Moton, Westminster, Cranberry Station,
Carroll Springs, William Winchester, and Charles Carroll Elementary.
McDaniel College football and basketball games
McDaniel College Open Houses and pep rallies
Locations for Meetings
Meetings to discuss rehearsals, performances, and other business would be
conducted in Levine.
Potential Times for Rehearsal
Rehearsal would likely be held twice a week at night from around 6-9 p.m.
Project Goals:
The project has three key goals:
Increase in McDaniel school and team spirit,
Further development of the McDaniel Music Programs Extra-Curricular
Scene
Community Outreach for the Arts through instruction of children at the
Boys and Girls Club.
Expected Results:
The Marching Terrors Drumline would increase school spirit and student
support. It would draw more students not only to the music program, but also to

athletic events and applying to McDaniel. It could also create a new course to
fulfill the creative expression requirement within the McDaniel Plan,
Furthermore, the Marching Terrors Drumline would also support the pursuit of
music and creative expression among children at local elementary schools and
the Boys and Girls Club and represent McDaniel in a positive light at community
events such as parades.
Sustainability
The drumline would be highly sustainable in that the drums would be used year
after year and the training provided to instrumentalists would prepare them well
for future seasons. Additionally, the Marching Terrors Drumline would be the
forerunner to the possibility of establishing a marching band at McDaniel
College, an idea widely supported among its musically inclined students.
Personal Interest in Volunteerism:
Mable Ive performed in marching bands for five years, serving both as a
section leader and drum major. I also have experience in writing music and
teaching children with my high schools drama program. Im interested in
pursuing this project because I feel that it would benefit McDaniel College school
spirit and the community of Westminster as a whole.
Nadia I have experience leading organizations, and doing fundraising work
through various campaigns such as Relay for Life and other volunteer activities. I
previously tutored children and have been trained in piano and choir. My interest
in pursuing this project is to create a greater sense of unity within the McDaniel
Community and to spread the availability of musical training to those who can
not easily access it.
Number of Volunteers Expected to be Participating:
Marching Snare Performers: 7
Marching Bass Performers: 7
Marching Toms Performers: 4
Marching Cymbals Performers: 4
Marching Percussion Instructors: Up to 3
Other Volunteers in Organization and Outreach: Up to 20
