Letter from the Director

Welcome to the 2020-2021 LAHS Band Program!

The Band Program here at Little Apple High School is a wonderful opportunity for students to
grow musically, socially, and mentally through musical instruction and collaboration,
performances, competitions, and travel experiences. I am so glad you and your student have chosen
to join our program. You will leave LAHS with a lifetime of music making skills, unforgettable
memories, and crucial life skills.

This school year, our Band Program Goals will guide students to:

• Possess skills in performing on their instruments from a novice to intermediate level

through fundamental, etude, solo, chamber, and literature exercises.
• Read and write music proficiently through sightreading, dictation, and music theory
activities.
• Respect a wide range of music styles, genres, and cultures through world music pedagogy
and performance.
• Connect musical ideas to relevant life situations through study of culturally relevant
material, citizenship skills, and ensemble leadership opportunities.
• Explore their personality and individualism through participating in creative activities that
develop musical palate, social skills, work ethic, positivity, and self-esteem.
• Establish a life of music making through practical use of musical knowledge and
appreciation post-education.
• Feel safe in the music classroom through a welcoming learning environment with
supportive teachers and peers.

Parents, the Little Apple High School Band has flourished with your support in our Band Boosters!
Competitions, football game concessions, uniform fittings, and so many other elements to our band
program would not be possible without you. If you are interested in joining the LAHS Band
Boosters, see the Band Booster page of this handbook (page 10).

Thank you all for participating in the Little Apple High School Band Program! This handbook
contains the guidelines for the 2020-2021 band school year. If you have any questions, feel free to
email or call me. We are looking forward to a musically wonderful year!

Musically Yours,

LAHS Mission Statement
The band program at Little Apple High School is designed to offer students a life-lasting musical experience through
rigor, relevance, and relationships. While in the program at LAHS, students will be challenged to grow musically and
intellectually through the study and performance of significant musical literature along with programmatically
appropriate works. Through guided preparation, analysis, and performance, LAHS band students will develop musical
skills and understanding that will prepare them for future musical study, performance, or a life of music appreciation.
They will also learn skills that will add to their success in endeavors outside the area of music. Time spent in large
and small group instruction and performance will lead to significant teacher to student and student-to-student
interaction building positive lasting relationships and leadership skills.

Course Description
The Little Apple High School Band Program is a student-centered music experience that includes all 9th-12th grade
band students. The LAHS band program provides an extensive and diverse musical education to the students of LAHS.
This is achieved through individual study and varied performances in many venues, including marching, concert, and
jazz with a supporting curriculum that places an emphasis on comprehensive musicianship. Performance opportunities
include large ensembles, chamber ensembles, and solos. The concepts students acquire in these activities are directly
related to skills necessary for auditions, presentations and interviews in both music and nonmusical situations. These
interacting ensembles focus on a variety of repertoire to support the students’ development of fundamentals and
musicianship from an intermediate to proficient level. In addition to developing skills necessary to perform on flute,
oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, and color guard, students
will learn peer collaboration and leadership skills through performance and rehearsal of many styles of music. All
music selected will challenge students within their zone of proximal development and encourage personal musical
growth. Discussion, demonstration, composition, and performance of all music styles will give students a lifelong
appreciation for music and music making. All ensembles will have many performance opportunities throughout the
year.

Importance of Music Education

Music programs exist to provide students with the opportunity to engage with music and other student musicians at
the highest level of performance, collaboration, and artistic expression. Engagement of this type stimulates the mind,
heart, and soul of each of the ensemble members. Members will learn the art and craft of solo and ensemble music
performance, the solitary discipline of practice and preparation, as well as the community experience of musical
sharing in a group setting. Through dedication to consistent individual practice and increasing awareness of the social
and musical environment of the ensemble, students will open a gateway to personal artistic expression and the impact
of that expression on the outside world. Mastery of these realms will, in turn, enhance the student experience with
music itself.

Course Goals
After a year in the LAHS Band Program, students will:

1. Understand the characteristic tone, mechanical demands, and expressive elements of their instruments
through various literature, fundamental exercises, and active listening.
2. Demonstrate accurate stylistic playing through sightreading, rehearsing, and performing of music from
various cultures and genres.
3. Perform all chosen music proficiently through guidance in world music pedagogy lessons, student-led
sectionals, and engaging rehearsals.
4. Develop consistent and effective practice skills through demonstrations, section discussions, error detection
games, recording projects, and portfolios.
5. Build an attitude of respect and responsibility in their everyday lives through peer collaboration, cultivating
a safe classroom environment, and our motto of Leave It Better Than You Found It.

4
Classroom Expectations
Our Philosophy: Building a Program of Respect
The LAHS instrumental music program is built on a community of student musicians, staff, teacher, families, and
supporters. The foundation of the Little Apple High School Band is created by the cooperation of all these groups. In
order to ensure a positive, challenging, and healthy environment for the all involved in and with the band, all areas of
instruction, learning, and interaction must be built on the concept of respect: Respect of oneself, Respect of others,
Respect of music, and Respect of the band program and facilities of LAHS.

GOLDEN RULES OF AN LAHS BAND MEMBER:

1. Act in a manner that is appropriate to the situation you are in.
2. Do your best to follow guidelines and instructions given by instructors and teachers.
3. Contribute to the musical success of the group by being prepared, focused, and on task for each and every
rehearsal and performance in each and every group you are a member of.
4. Positively contribute to an understanding, compassionate, and respectful environment that is safe and
welcoming to all peers, no matter their differences.
5. Be a positive healthy role model to the school and society at all times.
6. Have all required materials with them at each and every rehearsal and performance.
7. Follow all uniform and concert dress guidelines.
8. Treat all of the high school’s equipment and facilities with care.
9. Keep others from treating band facilities and equipment improperly.
10. Work to keep the band room and other rooms used by the band clean and neat. LEAVE IT BETTER THAN
YOU FOUND IT!

Attendance Policy
Band is a group performance experience therefore it is important that all members of the group are on time to and
present at all required events. When conflicts arise in students’ schedules it is important that they are communicated
to the directors far in advance of the event in question. The following attendance policies will be used in determining
the impact of an absence on a student’s band participation grade.
• All required rehearsals, events, and performances are listed on the band schedule (available online
through the band website).
• All required rehearsals, events, and performances will be graded starting with the first day of school.
• Excused absences will not have an impact on a student’s grade. However, if a student has 2 or more
excused absences within a one-week period, the student will not be allowed to march that weekend.
• Students missing rehearsal for non-excused absences will be subject to being pulled from upcoming
performances.
• Students with jobs will be expected to be at all rehearsals, inform your employers accordingly.
Definition of Excused Absence
1. An absence will be considered excused in non-emergency cases when proper notification has been given to
and approved by Ms. Casey at least 14 days in advance of an absence from a rehearsal, sectional, or football
game and with at least 30 days’ notice prior to a concert performance or marching contest.
a. Valid non-emergency absences examples:
i. College visit (not valid on day of marching contest or concert)
ii. Once in a lifetime event (not valid on day of concert or marching contest unless agreed
upon by director)
iii. Religious commitment
iv. College audition/testing
v. Major family event (wedding, graduation, death)
vi. Other reason may be considered as long as presented to the Director of bands 14 or 30
days prior to the event depending on the category of the absence.
b. Non-Valid non-emergency absence examples that will not be considered for approval:

5
i. Work related absences
ii. Wanting to attend parties
iii. Wanting to attend concerts
iv. Non-emergency appointments
2. Absences incurred due to emergencies will not impact a student’s grade. If important information/training is
missed, a student may be pulled from a performance that closely follows the absence. In the case of a
family/personal emergency students should contact Ms. Casey as soon as it is feasible.
3. If a student is absent from school due to illness, absence at a band event on the same day will not impact their
grade. If important information/training is missed, a student may be pulled from a performance that closely
follows the absence.
Special Situations: Band Camp
Band camp is an important part of the training that prepares the band for participation in its fall marching contests and
football game appearances. Students will not be given a grading penalty for missing portions of band camp; however,
their ability to fully participate as a marching member will be impacted by the number of hours missed. The following
is a list of possible outcomes for a student missing days of band camp:
1. 1-3 days of absence from camp
a. Student may retain a performance spot in the group or be moved to an alternate position or
performing in the front ensemble in a non-marching capacity; however, they will not be allowed
to perform until the directors have approved that they have completed all make up work. This
means the student in question may be held back from performing in the first event of the band
season
b. Students missing days of camp will not be eligible for solos or leadership positions.
2. 4+ days of absence from camp without pre-approval:
a. Student would be ineligible to be a student leader in the marching band
b. Student is ineligible for solos in the marching show
c. Student will be moved to a position as an alternate
d. The decision to move a student from alternate is at the director’s discretion based on the needs
of the band
Grading Policy
The Little Apple High School Band is a co-curricular course. All events including those outside of the normal school
day will be considered graded course work. Therefore, grading should be taken as seriously as any other school subject.
On the first day of band camp, students will receive an assignment schedule with due dates and expectations listed.
All grades will be based on the following criteria:
1. Attendance at rehearsals and events (40%)
2. Testing of specific musical skills (20%)
3. Assignments (20%)
a. Must be submitted by the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted and will result
in a 0 in the gradebook.
4. Student participation (20%)
Performance Policies
Each performance for the band is equivalent of a major test or project in another class. Students must be highly
prepared for each performance due to the fact that other members of the ensemble are counting on them to
perform/succeed as the member of that ensemble/team. In the situation that a student is not prepared to perform in a
concert, festival, contest, or event, Ms. Casey will maintain the right to have that student sit out of the performance in
question. If held from a performance, the student will complete an alternate assignment will be granted so that they
may receive points for the performance.
Rehearsal Expectations
Marching Band
All rehearsals are required and mandatory. Rehearsal dress includes appropriate weather attire, tennis shoes (NOT
Converse), and socks. For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to march in any other footwear. Students must

6
have individual water bottles labeled with their name at all rehearsals. Water bottles will be kept close and frequent
water breaks will be taken. Students are required to have all music and drill in a three-ring binder with page protectors
at all rehearsals. TO BE ON TIME IS TO BE EARLY. TO BE ON TIME IS TO BE LATE. Plan ahead with
transportation to rehearsals. Arrive 15 minutes early to prepare and set up before practice.
• Marching Band is during 1st hour in the fall semester. Rehearsals will begin at 7:00am and
last through the 1st hour time (7:45am-8:30am).

during the first week of Spring classes for a drum set position. Bass drummers and cymbal players
may also participate.
• Pit Orchestra (Spring Musical only)- Select musicians will be allowed to perform with the LAHS
Theatre Department in the annual Spring Musical. Interest forms for this small ensemble will be
available during the first week of Spring classes. The instrumentation for the Pit Orchestra depends
on the musical being performed that year. Typically, instruments are one-to-a-part. Students may
earn volunteer service hours by participating in this ensemble.
o Rehearse every Monday and Wednesday after school from 3:15-4:15pm until the
Theatre Department wishes to rehearse with the Pit Orchestra.
Performance Dates can be found at www.LAHSTheatre.org

Auditions/Chair Placement
Selective placement is a useful tool in assuring that all students are performing in the ensemble that best fits their skills
and learning needs. Students should view auditions as a helpful process that will empower them to succeed on the
highest level. Marching band chair placement auditions will occur on the third day of band camp. Students will
be required to play the fight song and alma mater for a staff member. Auditions for concert ensembles will
occur after the marching season has ended, approximately in November. All students will audition with the
KMEA District Band (10th-12th grade) or John Phillip Sousa Band (9th grade) excerpts (which can be found at
www.ksmea.org, or picked-up in the band office at the start of the school year), as well as sight-reading and
scales determined by Ms. Casey. Specific passages and requirements for each instrument will be posted in the
band room on October 1st.
• Auditions are required for all performance classes.
• Auditions are necessary to determine student placement and part assignments in all ensembles
• Students will be re-evaluated periodically for participation in select performance ensembles
• Auditions may be live or recorded at the directors' discretion
• Students who are selected for leadership positions must complete any camps or training required for that
position
• Ms. Casey may change student seating or participation in any ensemble or group if the student in
question is not following the guidelines for that group or is consistently unprepared for
participation in that ensemble.

Private Lessons
(Required for Wind Ensemble Members)

Why?
Private lessons are the most effective way for young musicians to fully develop their performing talents.
Private teachers help students develop tone quality, technique, musical style, practice discipline, and
musical preparation. The lessons use a combination of explanation and demonstration while building the
student’s confidence to enjoy playing in group or solo situations. Private teachers use a variety of materials
including solos, exercise books, audition materials, as well as parts from full band arrangements. A
student’s private teacher will become an important mentor and role model in the student's musical
development.

How?
30 minute or 1-hour weekly lessons are taught by outstanding professional teachers and college students
around LAHS. These can be scheduled weekdays after school and evenings at either LAHS or at the
instructor’s private studio. Private lessons are required for Wind Ensemble participation. Percussion
students must study with a private teacher who teaches mallets and timpani as part of their curriculum.

Cost: Ranges from $15-$30 per 30-minute lesson with payments usually made four lessons in
advance. Lessons can be started or stopped any time during the school year with makeup
lessons given for illness, emergencies, or other excused absences. During the winter lessons
are cancelled if school is closed or dismissed early.

Equipment
All LAHS Band instruments, facilities, props, and other equipment will be treated with care by members and others
in Little Apple High School. We must keep all equipment working and in the best condition for as long as possible.
ALWAYS return equipment and instruments back into the proper storage area (band trailer or instrument storage
room) at the end of every use.
Instruments
The maintenance, repair and insurance against theft or damage of personal instruments are solely the
responsibility of each student. Students are responsible for maintenance, repair, and insurance of school owned
instruments against theft or loss while in their possession. Instruments must be returned at the end of the school year
(May 15th, 2020) in the same condition as issued. An instrument rental form can be found on page 17.
Personal Instruments
• A quality program requires quality musical instruments. By the time a student is a freshman at
LAHS, he/she will be expected to be using a quality instrument that is in working condition. If a
purchase is needed, the Ms. Casey will be happy to consult with the student and parents in order to
avoid an inappropriate purchase.
• Uniquely colored instruments (any that do not match the original/standard metallic colors) will not
be allowed to use in any ensemble. Students must be uniform in dress and in instrument appearance.
• With all personal instruments, it is strongly recommended that the instrument be insured through
your homeowner’s policy or a private company. The school district will not assume liability for
maintenance, repair, or damage of personal instruments.
School Owned Instruments
• There is no charge to the students for use of these instruments. Since the students are not paying for
these instruments, we ask that they be treated with extreme caution and care. The student is
responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment.
• The LAHS marching band uses silver brass instruments. If a student has a personal instrument but
it is not silver, they need to check out a school instrument for the marching season.
• Students must provide their own personal accessories such as mouthpiece, drumsticks, and reeds.
The student is responsible for damage to the instrument while in his/her possession.
• In the month of June, all school owned instruments will be inspected and appropriately sent in for
annual repairs.
• On Saturday, July 11, 2020 from 12-8pm, marching band school instruments will be available for
check-out in the band room. If a student cannot make this time, they may receive their instrument
on the first day of band camp. Concert instruments will be available for check out on the first
day of school.
Recommended Equipment:
We are lucky to be enjoying band at a time when there are more good quality instrument brands at reasonable prices
than any time in history. Unfortunately, there are also more instruments that are made of thin, not-repairable materials
than ever. Many of the “internet” type brands do not have parts available- many of these instruments are one time use
instruments and cannot be repaired. At best, these instruments are not tunable and simply will not play consistently.
Please have a band director check an instrument not on this list before you buy it. Follow THIS link or scan this QR
code for a folder of instrument equipment and maintenance recommendations.

10
Uniforms
The LAHS Band Program must look as professional as it sounds. Proper uniform purchase and care is required for all
members. Any question about attire should be consulted with Ms. Casey BEFORE the week of a concert.
Concert Ensembles
For all performances, black on black dress is required. This means solid black! No patterns should be visible. The
following list is the required dress for concerts:
• Long sleeve black button-down dress shirt with a collar and black buttons
• Black style dress pants
• Black belt
• Black socks (men’s and women’s)
• Black dress shoes
• Any t-Shirts worn underneath must be black
• Black dresses may be worn, but they must comply with the dress code knee-length minimum.
• Avoid high heels—tripping and damaging an instrument or other equipment is not ideal.
Marching Band
All uniforms, band member or color guard, will be kept
in the uniform storage closet in the band room. Nobody is
permitted to leave the band room with their uniform. All
bibbers, jackets, shakos, gauntlets, plumes, flags, rifles, and
costumes must be properly folded/hung in the proper uniform bag
and given to the band parent in charge of uniform check-in.
Uniform fittings will occur on July 25th, 2020 from 8:00am-
7:30pm (first Saturday of band camp). Each student is
responsible for repair or replacement of any damaged or
unreturned uniform or accessory. The following accessories
will be purchased for the student by the band parents as part of the
band fee:
• Black socks (men’s and women’s)
• Black marching shoes Drum Major Band Member
• Gloves
• Compression T-shirt worn under the uniform
• Show shirt
• Band polo (pep band)
Students will be charged for the replacement of any lost
uniform or accessory items.

Colorguard (costume dependent on show theme)

Finances
Required Expenses and Fees:
All high school music organizations levy fees to cover expenses of uniform upkeep, additional equipment, school-
owned instrument usage fees, repairs, supplies and other program operation expenses not covered in the regular music
budget. Program fees are kept as low as possible per student and are managed through the local booster club:

• Program Operations Fee: Each student in the LAHS Band will be responsible for a Program Operations
Fee that will be established each year by the LAHS Band Booster’s Executive Board. The philosophy is that
each high school student will share an equal part of the financial responsibility of funding band program
expenses not provided by the District. Some of these expenses include special music arrangements, marching
drill, flags and supplies for the marching band, contest entry fees, instruments, equipment, and repairs not
provided by the School District, clinician fees, and band boosters administrative costs such as postage and
printing. Students may pay by cash or check made out to the Little Apple High School Band Booster
Association.
• Major Trips: Students are responsible for raising money for special band trips. Large trips will be
announced with adequate time for students to prepare for the expense involved in such travel. A schedule of
payments will be posted by the Band Boosters. The Booster Treasurer and Band Boosters will manage all
payments for band trips. The school district is not responsible for transactions related to band trips.

Fundraisers
• All money raised during fundraising activities belongs to the organization’s general fund. There are no
refunds granted from fundraising money.
• If a high school student withdraws from an organization or fails academically, and is unable to participate in
the organization, any money earned through fundraisers will remain in the organization’s general fund. Any
money over and above the costs of the “operating fee” and trip costs will remain in the organization’s general
fund.
• The Area Booster Club and the individual school principal must approve all fundraising activities.
• All funds raised must be deposited with and accounted for through each Area Booster Club.
• Financial assistance is available for students who need help meeting required maintenance fees and other
expenses related to this activity. Assistance, based on the organization’s needs and commitment and interest
of the individual student may be obtained through fundraising or other resources (local booster club, campus
funds, etc.). Consult the Head Director for more information.

Refunds and Transfer of Funds

• To follow Internal Revenue Service mandates, no scholarship money earned through fundraising will be
refunded.
• If a freshman, sophomore or junior overpays or has surplus scholarship money, that money will be carried
forward to the following year.
• Any senior may request all of his/her out-of-pocket excess money, money personally paid to be refunded
upon graduation. Excess scholarship money earned through fundraising participation can be credited to a
