McCain, KS 66405

Dear Dr. Payne,

The Little Apple High School Band is pleased to present you with our budget proposal. Over the
next five years, our goal is to expand the program through a quality inventory, diverse music
library, and educational travel. This budget allows for growth in both areas through buying new
instruments, attending quality competitions, and acquiring essential repertoire.

Attached you will find a five-year budget overview divided into three sections: a yearly budget
summary, itemized description, and rationale. The rationale will explain why each of the items,
instruments, and materials are necessary for the success of our program.

Our music program community is constantly growing. To maintain our tradition of excellence
and diversity of music education, we must provide our students with the best equipment for a
positive musical experience. With this budget, we will be able to further develop our program,
increase membership, and broaden our repertoire curriculum.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for
your time.

Sincerely,

Meredith Casey

Section 3: Support Information
2020-2021:
Instruments
Fox Renard Model 222 Bassoon: Link to Product
Fox is one of the number one brands for bassoons, including variations for beginner,
intermediate, and professional players. As we expand our program, there will be a need for more
than two students on this instrument. There are also used Fox bassoons for sale at a lowered
price. The Capital Outlay Fund would be used to purchase this instrument because of its long-
term use, price, and use to the school.

Fox Renard Model 333 Protégé Oboe: Link to Product

With the growth of our program, there will be a need for one or two students to switch to oboe
for higher level literature. Fox is a well-respected brand for this instrument. While an
intermediate oboe is more expensive than a beginning instrument, it is essential at the high
school level and will last much longer in a school setting.

Replacement Equipment
Manhasset M48 Carton of 6 Music Stands ($195/pack): Link to Product
Many music stands go through wear and tear each year. To replace stands beyond repair, I plan
to purchase six music stands each year. This specific deal is cheaper than buying stands
individually. The number of cartons of stands I purchase may depend on enrollment, usage, and
budget.

Music Library
All music bought this year is essential to broadening a student’s musical repertoire. Several
pieces bought will be used as large ensemble festival pieces. Show music for marching band is
chosen based on a theme, student abilities, and athletic entertainment. In addition, this five-year
plan aims to diversify our library with world music selections.

Travel/Contest/Festival Fees
Educational travel to competitions, festivals, concerts, and other experiences promotes positive
student interactions and maximizes musicianship. We also represent the Little Apple Schools in
district and state-wide events, which showcase our students’ abilities and encourages them to
uphold high moral standards. Schools in our area and of similar size participate in many of these
travel activities. There are typically registration fees for students and groups to these events.
Students expose their minds to other perspectives with schools, learning, musicianship, and
people during these opportunities.

Awards
The John Philip Sousa Award is a nationally recognized award given to one of the most
dedicated students in the band program. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn
Musicianship Medals. The variations of this award (bronze, silver, gold, and platinum) are given
based on merit and achievement throughout the year. The qualifications for these awards are

22
detailed in the band handbook. Awards increase ownership in the band, so I feel these are
essential to retaining membership and recognizing student success.

Printing/Publicity/Advocacy
Programs at concerts are essential to audience attendance and participation. Posters serve as a
great way to encourage people to visit our school and music program. These also support a
positive classroom environment because students can share their achievements with others.

Repair and Maintenance

Equipment endures natural wear and tear throughout its use. To make our inventory last longer, I
plan to service all instruments each summer. This may include general maintenance, cleaning,
and repairs. Costs can be saved on a few instruments, such as brass or percussion, by having
volunteer students clean them. For more complicated cleaning and repairs, we will use the most
reliable and cost-effective repair shop near the school. A few of these repairs are specified in the
budget. Students are required to purchase their own daily cleaning and maintenance supplies for
their instrument.

Contractual Services
A team of instrument specialists is crucial for the success of any band, especially marching band.
Band camp sets the tone for the entire season, which means that the most help for each section is
needed. Music education students from surrounding colleges are apt to volunteer for these
teaching experiences. For the entire marching band season, a percussion instructor and color
guard coordinator are essential. The percussion keeps the tempo of the entire band, while the
color guard improves the visual aspect of the music and marching. These two sections have
individualized needs, so having these two instructors allows the director to focus on the other
instruments.

Concert Wear Maintenance

Students provide their own black dress clothing for concert band performances. However,
marching band uniforms are expensive and are worn by many students over multiple years. To
make these uniforms last as long as possible, they should be dry cleaned yearly. There should
also be extra uniform part replacements such as buttons, plumes, and zippers to make repairs as
necessary.

23
2021-2022:
Instruments
Fox Renard Model 555 English Horn: Link to Product
Fox is a highly respected brand of double reed instruments, especially for the intermediate level.
Little Apple High School has never owned an English horn, but many musical works call for this
colorful instrument voice. There is a need for more double reed players in the band, and this is
one way to encourage their participation and train our double reed players in all aspects of their
playing.

Holton H378 Intermediate French Horn: Link to Product

Holton brands are one of the best for brass instruments. Two of our French horns are damaged,
so investing in a new one before the old ones are too damaged is a good idea. It is also ideal to
have at least three horn players in each ensemble, so this will give more students the opportunity
to play. Additionally, this instrument is difficult to transport, so an additional horn can be kept at
school while another stays at home to prevent travel damage.

Hamilton KB100 Music Stand Storage Cart: Link to Product

As we acquire more music stands, there is a need for more storage carts so our band room can
stay neat and organized. These carts can also protect the music stands from getting stolen or
damaged. This specific cart can hold up to 24 stands and is cheaper and easier to maneuver than
other brands.

Music Library
All music bought this year is essential to broadening a student’s musical repertoire. Several

2022-2023:
Instruments
Majestic X6535D 3.5-Octave Padauk Bar Xylophone: Link to Product
Majestic is one of the most trusted brands for percussion instruments. Our program currently
only owns one of these xylophones, which only allows two students to play it at once. This
instrument is essential to increase percussion student involvement in concert ensembles as well
as in the front ensemble of our marching band.

Yamaha YBL-421G Intermediate Bass Trombone: Link to Product

Yamaha is an excellent brand for brass instruments, especially trombones. In concert ensembles,
the low voices are the foundation of the band. This auxiliary trombone supports this role in both
concert band and jazz band. Many wind ensemble pieces call for this instrument, and almost all
jazz charts include this part as well. Little Apple High School has never owned a bass trombone,
so this would be an excellent step in broadening our low brass students’ instrument range.

Yamaha YTS-480 Intermediate Bb Tenor Saxophone Lacquer: Link to Product

For saxophones, Yamaha is the best brand for all skill levels. Although most students are able to
afford alto saxophones, the tenor saxophone is a color instrument not many can purchase. Most
of our current tenor saxophones are badly damaged and on the edge of retirement, so investing in
new tenor saxophones are a must. This instrument is used in all ensembles, especially jazz band.

King 1117 Ultimate Series Marching Bb Trumpet: Link to Product

For smaller instruments such as the trumpet, we require our students to purchase their own.
However, some students do not want to use a nice concert trumpet in the rough outdoors for
marching band. By having a few extra trumpets in our inventory, students can keep their concert
horn in professional shape while still playing in marching band. Additionally, other brass players
can learn the trumpet in another ensemble such as jazz band. This brand of trumpet is highly
respected and used by marching bands all across the country.

Yamaha YAS-480 Intermediate Eb Alto Saxophone Lacquer: Link to Product
For saxophones, Yamaha is the best brand for all skill levels. Although most students are able to
afford alto saxophones, many choose to use a professional horn for concert band and a school
instrument for marching band or pep band. Additionally, many woodwind students double-up on
instruments for jazz band. A few of our current alto saxophones are damaged, so purchasing
another could give clarinetists, flautists, oboists, or bassoonists the chance to play in jazz band.

Yamaha YFH-631G Series Bb Flugelhorn: Link to Product

Another colorful auxiliary instrument is the flugelhorn, which is used heavily in jazz band
ballads and individual playing. The flugelhorn is an important study for many advanced high
school trumpet players and jazz musicians. This instrument can also be used as a featured soloist
in marching band. Since our school currently only has one of these, it is beneficial to invest in
another for more players to use.

Majestic 4.3-Octave Deluxe Series Marimba with Padauk Bars: Link to Product
Majestic is one of the most trusted brands for percussion instruments. Our program currently
only owns one of these marimbas, which only allows two students to play it at once. This

Instruments
Jupiter JSP1100 Quantum Series BBb Sousaphone Lacquer: Link to Product
The largest and most expensive brass instrument, the tuba or sousaphone, goes through lots of
wear and tear. Although these instruments can usually last for decades, it is a good plan to
regularly purchase a large instrument such as this, so a program does not have to buy ten new
ones all at once. Jupiter is a well-respected brand for sousaphones that are highly durable. With
large instruments, I plan to purchase at least one new replacement every five years. This
instrument will last the school many decades and is worth the cost.

Yamaha RM-FC-S Field-Corps Aluminum Tubular Lift-Front SFZ Marching Snare Carrier: Link

The heaviest instruments in the marching band, the drumline, takes a toll on students’ health
unless they are supported with the proper equipment. The Yamaha snare carrier helps the
musicians support their instrument on their body. If the drumline carriers are not replaced
regularly, students could leave high school with severe back and posture health issues. I plan to
completely replace all drumline carriers at minimum every five years. This particular brand of
carrier is used by professional marching bands around the country because of their durability,
support, and affordable price.
