Poetry Slam- US Not THEM

Together: Do you see the typical me? Does society even see diversity?
Me: Do you see a gangster? Do you see a boy who needs extra help in school? Do you see a
lost cause? Well let me tell you whats seen and not assumed: A man who has more horses in his
closet than Ralph Laurens polo team, a student who graduated from high school in the top thirty
percent of his class, a cause that is here and working here at UNC Charlotte to further his
education. What you see is the color of my skin and not the contents of my character. You see a
gun and bullets when there is actually pen and paper. You see what your sight has compelled you
to see from history and well I am not a part of history; I am history in the making.
Together: Do you see the typical me? We see the diversity!

Reflection
By far one of my favorite daybook entries. I just love how I wrote and what I stand for. I feel this
poetry slam with my group really sent a message and it honestly meant something to us.
Diversity is very ignorant to many different people, especially humans who are isolated to only
their own culture and beliefs. People today are so culturally ignorant, I would not be surprised if
they didnt know if other races of humans existed. I would love for people to view my portfolio
to honestly view it and see the diversity and complexity of my writing and learn something from
me, morally and intellectually.
