WILBY HIGH SCHOOL SAVING LIVES

To: Mrs. Brown

From: Reina Irizarry
Date: November 16, 2014

I write this letter to propose an event for a Blood Drive - Food Can at your school on
Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. This event can take place in the
auditorium or cafeteria which ever place do you believe is best. The purpose of this event is to
make ELL students and students at Wilby aware of the importance of making a difference in the
peoples lives. Every three seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion and 870 million people
around the world do not have enough food to eat; and 22,000 children die each day due to
poverty.
The objectives of this event are: Students will learn to become leaders and strong contributors
to society. Students will gain diverse life experience as they develop and expand knowledge and
skills useful to become self-fulfilled members of a society. Students will learn the importance of
encouraging people to donate their blood voluntarily and help others in need. Having the ELL
students and others students in the school working together will make also big differences in
their students lives because they will have an opportunity to build a positive interpersonal
relationship. Students need constantly positive experiences because these experiences will help
them to become self-respect, respect for other, become independent, intellectually curious, and
self-fulfilled members of society, as you mentioned every morning in your announcements.

Parents, school community members, district leaders, staff members from the school, local
businesses, and health members will be invited to the event with the purpose to teach our
students that global issues are every human being responsibility. Students will be able to
experience the importance of working cooperatively with others to resolve problems that involve
the whole world. I will ask some local businesses like Stop & Shop supermarkets, Wal-Mart
stores, Walgreens and Rite Aid Pharmacy, and others to donate items for this event. The Health
Center Red Cross staff will be participating in the blood drive. I choose Staywell Health Center
because this place is for low income families or people who do not have health insurance. They
can go there and receive services at a very low price or at no cost. I want my students parents
be aware of this place because as you should know a lot of my ELL students parents are
immigrant who some of them are not legal citizen in the country or do not have health insurance.
I want my students parents to learn the importance of donating blood and helping other that
are in need around the world. I want to educate my students parents about global issues; how
important is to making a change in others lives as well as them, and how to become involved in
the community. Everyone who participates in this event would learn to see world problems as
community problems; together we can help our community and others to resolve their problems.
Students will learn that together we can make a difference in someones life. Students,
families, and others need to understand that even though we all have different perspective about
some global issues together we can make our community a better place to live. Families and
members of our community need to recognize that if we are not part of the solution we are the
problem. In general, throughout this event I would like to create a school and community

that welcomes you with open arms in order to create a positive environment and willing to make
a change to a culture, economic, political, and others all aspects that involve Global issues.
The food can donation that we collect will be donated to people in Africa. I would like students
also to get involved in helping in this event collection. I want them to help in packing the food
and any other items collected on the event. ELL parents will be donating Hispanic food for the
participant of this event.
In my presentation, I will provide a list of different sources that families can explored about
human issues. I will provide some information about how important is to donate blood. Also, it
will be information about hunger people around the world. Some stakeholder will be presenting
some information during this great event. I hope you agree to this event and I hope to see you
there as well.
Thanks,

Reina Irizarry
