International Womans day (IWD) is celebrated on
March 8th and is an occasion marked by womens group
around the world. This date is also commemorated by the
United Nations. In many countries, it is also a national
holiday. When women come together to celebrate their day,
they can look back on a tradition that represents generations of
struggle for equality, justice, peace and freedom.
International Womens Day is the story of ordinary
women as makers of history. It is rooted in the centuries-old
struggle of women to participate in society on equal footing
with men. In French, for example, during the French
Revolution, French women calling for liberty, equality and
fraternity marched on Versailles to demand equal rights for
women.
The concept of an International Womens Day first arose
at the turn of the 20th century and was initially celebrated on a

small scale in 1911. Since these early years, however, this

event has assumed global dimensions which have helped make
its commemorations a rallying point for coordinated efforts to
demand womens rights and their participation in all aspects of
the political and economic process.
However the celebration of International Womens Day
in Indonesia is not very popular. The special day celebrated
for women in Indonesia is known as Mothers Day. This is
based on the struggle of Indonesian women to participate in
broader aspect of life in order to free the country from Dutch
occupation. Mothers Day in Indonesia is celebrated on
December 22nd and it is based on the womens congress held
in Yogyakarta from December 22nd until 25th, 1928. The
occasion is celebrated annually across the country.
