What is the rhetorical situation of each? What is the layout? Images? What are the theses?

How
are the articles structured? What types of word choices and sentence structures do the writer use?
What other voices do the writers bring in? What counts as evidence/support? What counts as
credibility/ethos? Do the writers use pathos? Logos? Is there a works cited? What interests you in the
article? What doesn't? What puzzles you?
The short piece for my genre analysis is much similar to many of other short pieces when it
comes to the rhetorical situation. The text is actually the lyrics to a song We are One (Ole Ola). The
song was the theme song for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The lyrics describe the love of the game
of futbal and the love of a mans country. It also describes the joining of nations through one sport every
four years. The language within the song goes from English to Spanish, so this could create a more
likeable and fun piece to sing, even if you do not speak one of the languages. The reader of such lyrics
are all the fans of soccer and possibly the fans of the singing and rapper Pitbull. There were many
authors in this piece. They include, Daniel Murcia, Thomas Troelsen, Jennifer Lopez, Henry Walter, Nadir
Khayat, Lukasz Gottwald, Armando Perez, Sia Furler, and Claudia Leitte. The constraints of this piece are
the fan base. Many people could not be fans of soccer so they do not hear the song, or they are not fans
of Pitbull. This just can make the song hard to become popular. The motivation of this song is to create
something that give excitement to the World Cup. All music gives an event some type of greater
emotion. It can pumped up the crowd, and also the lyrics can get the audience to be motivated to be
more involved in the country.
The layout of the lyrics is very repetitive. It usually has a verse of English, then the soccer chant,
Ole Ola, followed by the main chorus, a verse in Spanish, and then so on from there. The images on
the page only show pictures of Pitbull. There are other songs sung by him on the page that I could look
up. There are also other readers comments about the song and lyrics. This helps me see how others feel
about the song. I would say there is emotion (pathos) within in the song. The words symbolize unity and
freedom and the ability to cheer on for your country. The love of ones country is a love that many could
become emotional with. This song interests me because not only does it create emotion and pride
within the song, but it is also about the sport that I love. Nothing like having a song that pumps you up
before going out on a field to play.
The popular piece for my genre analysis is a New York Times essay about the Haitian Womens
Soccer Team. It is written by JER LONGMAN on October 4, 2014. The article is called Soccer Is All They
Have: Haitian Women's Team Seeks World Cup Berth. This title is exactly what the text reveals. It
describes the how the Haitian team has gone and still is going through hard times, like the earthquake,
and the importance of wanting to play in the 2015 Womens World Cup. The article says, Each woman
on the team has a story of despair Each player, too, has a story of resilience and perseverance.
Quote that I love: Soccer is the only thing that takes the stress away, said Marseille, the team
captain. If we make the World Cup, Im going to be so proud of me.
The readers of this article would also be soccer fans and also people who just love a good
motivation story about strength and determination. The constraints of this article is that the Haitian
team still do not know if they are going to make the World Cup, so that is almost like a cliffhanger. The
author could not tell us the outcome yet, leaving readers wanting to know more. The reason for writing
this article would to get others outside of Haiti to realize how much the World Cup and the game of
soccer means to people and other countries. Its to give information about how far people would go to

follow their dreams and wishes. Within the article, there are the voices of the players on the team giving
their insight and feelings on how and what they have to overcome in the next months. Their emotion
(pathos) for the game can even be heard within their words. You can see how badly they want to be a
part of the global game just by reading what they have to say. The logos of the article would be on the
statistics of the other teams trying to qualify for the World Cup. It gives important dates to remember
and also talks about certain players and their abilities. It also give information about past World Cups,
and also there is information about the country of Haiti itself. The reader has to know what the country
is like in order to feel the emotion the players are going through.
The reason why I love this article is because it is exactly why I wanted to write about the World
Cup. It is very important to myself, but I also know that to others it is way way way more important to
them. It is basically life for some people, and I want Americans to see what other countries have done
for this game. What others have given up or pursued in order to live their dreams, or to even watch the
game. People have died for the game, physically lost their lives for the game. This article shows how
much this sport and game means to people. I feel that Americans rarely ever feel this for anything that
creates unity in our country.
The academic journal that I am using for my genre analysis is from the Wiley Online Library in a
book called KYKLOS. The authors name is Veysel Avsar, and the reader would also be anyone who wants
to know about the background information about what goes into planning something as grand as a
world cup and the impacts it has on the countries involved, especially the hosting country. Another
reader could possibly be someone who is studying trading effects or economic studies in other countries
around the world.
This study analyzes the trading effects of FIFA World Cup in two dimensions. First, it show that
participating in the World Cup significantly increases exports from the participant countries to the host
countries, relative to a control group of non-participants. Second, it demonstrate that trade is
reasonably higher for host-participant pairs compared to other country pairs. It also provide dynamic
estimates for both cases and offer plausible arguments and important channels for our findings. The
reasoning behind creating this journal is to inform the readers what it takes to have the world cup. My
other pieces gave the more emotional and more opinionated side of the makings of a world cup, but this
article shows the actual facts.
The article is set up basically as a fact sheet. The beginning gives the information about the
trading effects on the countries in the world cup, but then towards the end it has all the numbers and
calculations so the reader could actually see what the writing meant and how people really traded. The
article gives a lot of dates to really show how long the process is in creating such a mega event. All of
these finding show the logos within the paper. It also compares the tournament to something like the
Olympics to give people who may not know much about the World Cup an idea to how important it is.
As for pathos, would all the numbers and calculations be considered to be it? They are fair and
trustworthy.
The reason as to why I chose this academic journal is because I also wanted to show people the
informational side of the World Cup and how much effort and time and money it takes to make the
World Cup happen. Like I said before in my popular piece, many people give up things in order for this
event to happen.

In my visual piece, the World Cup Trophy is on the right side of a square image looking to be
sitting on a piece of black wood. Then, more in the center of the picture in what seems to be in cutout
white wood material letters, FIFA; for the Game. For the World. The trophy itself possess a lot of
meaning. The bottom of the trophy where someone were the hold it are images of men reaching up
holding the world into their hands. The men are almost melted into the trophy making them almost
unrecognizable, but the audience can still depict those men. The words mean a lot in this image because
they are describing the trophy. The word structure in this image is strong. I have always been one who
likes to use short sentences to make my points. I feel they are to the point, and leave impacts on people.
Why do I think this? Well, usually someone is going to remember one words or a couple words over a
whole sentences. These three worded lines create power and emotion (ethos). The constraints of this
image is once again not many people even know what the World Cup is to a certain extent so by just
looking at this trophy they might not know what it is particularly for. The reason for this image is to
describe what the trophy means. It if for the game. For the world. It is all connected to us. I chose this
image because I think the trophy symbolizes more than the winning team of the tournament. It
symbolizes how people make up the world and in order for our world to keep going we must come
together and lift it up and stay strong for it. Because if we fail as the people of the world so does the
world.
