Three 45 minute periods
Many students have a hard time with graphing and solving
equations. This lesson will help students graph and solve equations
in a fun way. By students working together in a group to solve and
graph each equation into a picture.

Curriculum Framework/
Standard

Michigan Common Core State Standards for mathematics: grade 9

o A-REI Solve systems of equations 5. Prove that, given a system of two equations in two
variables, replacing one equation by the sum of that
equation and a multiple of the other produces a system
with the same solutions
7. Solve a simple system consisting of a linear equation
and a quadratic equation in two variables algebraically
and graphically. For example, find the points of
intersection between the line y = 3x and the circle x2
+y2 = 3.
o Students in each group will solve and calculate each
equation given to them by making a diagram step by step in
Kidspiration.
o Students will then plot each point the points from the
answers they got in the equations they solved.
o After the students plot every point, they will connect the
dots. If the students did each equation correct their graph
should either become a picture of a dog, elephant, or
penguin.
o After the students are done graphing they will then color
their picture they have created.
Students will use Kidspriation to solve equations step by step
o Graphing paper
o Scrap paper
o Calculator
o Pencil
o Markers
o Computer
o Kidspiration
1. Teacher will instruct students how to graph equations by using
Microsoft Power Point.
2. Teacher will break students up into 5 groups of 4.
3. Teacher will pass out different equations to each group, so each
groups graph will form a different picture.
4. After students finish their graphs, each group will show the class
the picture that their graph made.
