Problem 1

The crane BCE is lifting the weight at D by means of a cable attached at C. To

operate the crane another weight is attached at F.
a. At the position shown calculate the reactions at the pin E if the mass of the load
at D is 100 kg.
b. If the breaking point of the cable carrying the load at F is 2200 N, calculate the
maximum weight that the crane can carry at D.
Problem 2

Bar ABC has a sliding peg at A that is free to move in the smooth fixed slot F. The
bar is held by a hinge at C. In the middle of the bar a cable is attached at B which is
held in tension by a weight at E. Calculate all the forces acting on the bar ABC if the
weight is 100 kg. The radius of the slot F is 1 m. The length of the bar ABC is 2 m.
Point B is exactly in the middle of the bar.

Problem 3

Bar ABC is hinged at A and held by spring at C. A motor at E is turning the crank BE
clockwise and moves the smooth slider at B along the bar ABC. The length of the
bar ABC is 5 m. The length of the crank BE is 2 m. The unstretched length of the
spring is 1 m and its k = 50 N/m. Calculate the torque exerted by the motor on the
crank if the current distance from C to D is 1.2 m and the current position of B is
halfway between A & C.
Problem 4

Cylinder A has a diameter of 100 mm and has a mass of 2 kg. Cylinder B has a
diameter of 80 mm and a mass of 1.5 kg. Calculate the forces between the inclined
planes and cylinder A.
Problem 5
The lengths of the members are as follows:
AD: 1 m
CD: 1 m
BD: 2 m
The force P is 15 N.

Start with and FBD of the entire truss. Calculate the reactions at A & B.
Do an FBD of point D. Calculate the force that member CD is exerting on D.
Do an FBD of point C. Calculate the forces exerted by members AC and BC on C.
Do an FBD of B. Calculate the force that member DB is exerting on B.
Go back to the FBD of D. Calculate the force that member AD is exerting on D.
