This is an excellent case of show, not tell. It implies
that the mother didnt care for or get along all that well
with the stepfather without having to ever say they
didnt get along. Its a logical implication to make,
progressing from the statement that the stepfather
didnt feel like he was really part of the family. It also
casts light on how the family communicates with few
words.
Again, this shows rather than tells. Instead of simply
saying again that George was treated like a son,
included in family gatherings or appreciated, an
example is given. It sets a mood for who these people
are, how they live despite their conditions.
Discussion Question: Write three or more questions that you think are important to think about. Consider the themes of the
course as you create your questions. Use your Critical Thinking/Blooms Taxonomy hand-out to help you develop a variety of
questions.
1. What is work like for the adults? We dont really hear how difficult it is for the parents, aside from the fact they dont
have as much money.
2. What did George think of other families? Did money alone make it easier for him, or was there a difference in people
that others knew? Did everyone have a Mr. Jackson?
3. Was Sam ever the victim of abuse? He seems to indicate his parents got mean, but its touched on for a few sentences
at most. Did he suffer at the hand Of his parents?
4. Sams mom knew about the drug addiction. Why didnt she help his sister? Make her stop?
5. If Rameck had the choice, would he actually skip out on going to a more distinguished school just to be with his
friends?

What really strikes me is how George underlines that he really was lucky to have a tight knit family, and a
surrogate father who really cared about him and was on his side, Mr. Jackson. Ive always wondered how my
situation would change without a strong family. The opposite side of that is that, he also doesnt have a
permanent father. Ive never had my dad run away, packup and leave. I really dont know that feeling its an
entirely alien sort of situation to imagine.
Also, my family doesnt really have substance abusers. Aside from my extended family, nobody drinks alcohol
even. I cant imagine finding out my sister did cocaine. But I also cant imagine ignoring or shoving it away
into some part of my memory. That just couldnt work for me, even if it was horrific. My parents hated when I
would argue with them.

Whats really illustrated here is that something as
violent as producing a firearm isnt the weird thing
here. Its pointing it at the tough guy. It speaks
volumes about how people treated one another in the
projects and how easily things could go wrong.

1. What was the normal clearance rate like for local schools?
2. What made Rameck stab the guy so easily, knowing full well it could kill him?
3. Was it peer pressure that killed so many young boys?

Ive never felt an urge to do drugs, or especially stab people. I get that the characters didnt have a strong
parental influence for most of their lives. What was different for me is that I had, and still have active parents,
and who are heavily, heavily pacifist. Which doesnt mean they want me to roll over and die if attacked, but
they instilled this idea that you dont just do stuff to hurt others for fun or reputation.

Highschool didnt challenge Rameck. Hes a smart
guy, despite his circumstances and he really deserves
the opportunity being presented to him.

Some of my absolute favorite, and absolute worst memories came from summer camp. From outdoor science
camp, to a generic sports camp, to orchestra camp. I really connected here to the writers more strongly than a lot
of other parts, which I didnt understand.
An exception was the parts with the guns. Having grown up with an interest in guns and police, I could
understand the sort of violence that happened in these communities. I also know what it feels like to hear about
a shooting or look down the barrel of a gun like Sam did.

With a single line, they show that they had a change
for long-term goals. Its poignant that the true feeling
of accomplishment for them comes from something
that was 100% illegal. Not posturing, beating people
up or doing drugs. Just having fun!
A tie isnt always a tie, after all. Its symbolic of how
hes pulled his life together, tied the knot and made
things tight for himself, become self-reliant.

3. Why was Tupac so important to the three?

Theres a lot to think about. I find a lot less to relate on, as it seems theyve gone over the hump of uncertainty
and realized their dreams, got all their certifications, bought their house and car. I mostly related to the stories
about the girls and learning how to drive cars it seems like common ground for every boy.

My dad has told me about the patients that hes lost. Or the ones that hes been blamed for. I felt this association
with the characters in these last chapters I just didnt before. Like I knew why they felt the way they did and did
the things they did, because Ive been exposed to the same environment.
