Attention Grabber
Assessment of
Prior Knowledge

Have mini-whiteboards on back desk for easy retrieval on the

way out of the classroom.
Have the worksheets on the back table to be picked up on the
way out as well.
Introduction
Time
Today we are going to explore the school, and investigate the
sounds of each location we stop by!
Ask the students: What are some of the sounds we might here
if we travelled around the school?
Allow for a couple suggestions.
Provide descriptive feedback/ positive reinforcement to
the student contributions
2 min
If students are struggling to make suggestions ask them
what might come from the bathroom or the computer
room.
Once students suggest a sound ask them where that
sound would come from if they did not clarify

Lesson Plan Template ED 3501 (Version C)

1) Students will listen attentively to instructions on how to
fill out their worksheets.
2) Students will travel the school quietly and will not
disrupt any other classrooms.
3) Students will follow the teachers directions throughout
the entire activity.
1) Discussion of what sounds are in the school
2) Exploration and Investigation of the school Sounds
Around Me worksheet.
3) Consolidation discussion of findings
4) Read Aloud- Mortimer by Robert Munsch
The teacher will provide an exemplar of how to fill out the
worksheet at each location.
Ex. If I was listening to the sounds in the classroom this is
what I could write down.
Title of the location I am investigating: Classroom
What I hear: The teacher will listen to the sounds of the
classroom and write them down on the board. Ex. students
moving in their desks, students breathing, etc.
When we travel to each location try and write at least two
sounds down that you hear. Remember to write any sound that
5 min
you hear, even if they are very quiet.
The teacher will then ask what the expectations are when
we are in the hallways.
- wait for student responses then add any lasting
comments about appropriate hallway behavior.
- Say, I challenge all of you to see if you can here what is
going on in the classrooms as we walk by them. That
means we need to be very quiet!
The teacher will then have students lineup at the door.
Body
- The teacher will lead the students to the first location
(passing and pausing at classroom doors for the
students to listen in as the class goes by).
- Once at the gym, have students sit down by the
doorway to listen and record sounds.
- The teacher will give the students 2-3 minutes to write
what they hear.
- The teacher will circulate the group of students to make
sure they are on task and to encourage them to quietly
listen for sounds
After the first location the teacher will tell students to finish
writing their last sound and stand up. The teacher will then lead
the students to the next location, the office.
Repeat again outside the music room.

Time

5 minutes
at each=
15
minutes

The teacher will then lead students back to the classroom and
ask them to sit in their desks.
- Providing a minimum amount of sounds to write down
will decrease the possibility that struggling students will
be overwhelmed by having to write every sound they
hear at each location.
- The teacher will go to a backup location incase one of
the intended locations is not occupied. Ex. Go outside
the kindergarten room, outside the computer room, etc.
- The teacher will discuss student findings after the
learning activity and get a verbal response from those
students who may have difficulty writing.

Consolidation of
Learning:

Lesson Plan Template ED 3501 (Version C)

- Students will also have time to add additional sounds to
their records during the consolidation discussion.
Closure
Time
Lead a final discussion:
Ask students sounds that they heard at each location. Make
sure you call upon different students, and try and discuss three
different sounds per location. Ex. Did anyone hear anything
else at the music room? Something different than the last
5 min
suggestion.

Feedback From
Students:
Feedback To
Students

What sounds were pleasant or unpleasant?

- allow for students to briefly expand on their interpretations.
Listen to student suggestions throughout the conversation as a
post-assessment.
Provide descriptive feedback and positive reinforcement to
their suggestions. Ex. Wow, good job hearing that sound.
