The Secrets of Literacy
Many different writers have different viewpoints of literacy. This article tries to bring to
knowledge the truth about literacy. There are many different ways to use literacy and that is
why it is commonly misused. Literacy then, is not simply what is said or written, but also what
is expressed or assumed within contextual and ideological systems related to a particular event
(Barton 3) Literacy is misunderstood and often used incorrectly by those who dont
understand it.
James Gee is brought up a lot in this article for his uses and knowledge of literacy. He
uses it correctly by establishing a mood that is felt through his writing. Literacy focuses on more
than just writing, it focuses a lot on what is taking place or the activity (Barton 2) The focus
depends a lot on the setting. For instance, in an educational setting, the primary focus would
probably be on reading or writing, or what is being expressed in the setting. Literacy is not an
easy concept to understand, but the best way to fully understand it, is to notice it in settings you
are placed in.
