Jose Rizal’s ideals were a product and composite of the teachings of what is
known as the philosophy of Enlightenment. That stage of philosophy marked the
dawn of the eighteenth century in Europe and continued to the 19th century.
Friar injustices and Spanish misrule. Jose Rizal’s writings transformed his stature
from a writer and propagandist against social and religious injustices of Spanish
rule in the Philippines that made him into a national hero.
“Ideas of the Enlightenment.” The advancement of individual liberty, social
progress, tolerance, scientific knowledge, constitutional government, and
separation of church and state: these were the main ideas of the Enlightenment.
Together, they tended to undermine the authority of both monarchy and Church.
They questioned the orthodoxy of fixed ideas.

Rizal’s Character Traits/Qualities How can these qualities help the Philippines?
1. Rizal’s enthusiasm to learn and educate himself with skills and expertise not
only benefitted his growth as an individual, but most importantly, also
contributed to the betterment of the nation and his fellow Filipinos. He never
stopped learning because he believed that for a country to be socially and
economically progressive, its people must not remain ignorant but empowered
through quality education.

For our part, we should develop within ourselves the same fervor Rizal had.
There is an inherent creative genius that lies within each and every Filipino.
Everyone has the potential to grow, excel and be the pride of the nation.  All that
is needed is to cultivate these and gain inspiration from the noteworthy
contributions of other individuals, such as our national hero.
2. An environmental advocate, Rizal was concerned, too, for the environment. As
a tribute to our national hero, we should continue his work of caring for the
environment by introducing innovative solutions to issues and problems of our
country, especially in light of the biggest threat to humanity and development,
which is climate change
3. Purity and Idealism•
2. “Pure and Spotless Must the Victim Be.” Another virtue of Rizal worth
emulating was his insistence on purity of thoughts and clean behavior. Perfection
in virtue is a condition of our union with God.
4. He was the founder of the civic organization "La liga Filipina", which inspired
the revolution of the katipunan, including heroes, Andres Bonifacio and Emilio
Aguinaldo. He may not be a warrior in the times of Spanish colonization, but he
showed his love for our country, in a non violent approach. He protested against
the Spanish crown, in the pursuit of equality and peace. He inspired the people,
to live up to themselves, and give them a sense of self-respect, thus, giving them
hope for a brighter future. These attributes, are enough for me, to rate him as a
leader, and more importantly a hero.
