Adolescence
Physical Developments: Girls breast starts to develop. At the age of 17 or 18 boys penis will
grow longer. Girls will start to grow hair in private area by 9 or 10 years of age.
Language Development: Adolescents can memorize more detailed information, such as driving
direction. Their vocabulary have increased to about 40,000 words or more. Their grammatical
skills are more advanced.
Cognitive Development: Girls are more confident when it comes to their reading skills and social
skills than boys (APA, 2002). It is noted that Adolescence can analyze situations logically in
terms of cause and effect and to entertain hypothetical situations and use symbols, such as
metaphors, imaginatively (APA, 2002, pg. 11).
Social/Emotional Development: Adolescents tend to get angry real quick.
Moral Reasoning/Self-Regulation: Think before reacting to certain situations. Clearly
understands the consequence of hanging with certain peer groups.
Atypical Development: Adolescent displaying abnormal behavior. For example: drinking
Social Factor: Living in a violent neighborhood.
Cultural Factor: Armed conflict in the country adolescent live in. Adolescent may have to harm
others to please parents.
Learning Development: Adults still need to help adolescence make right decisions in life. Parents
can plan fun vacations in peaceful places.
Play-Based Activities: Encourage children to join the band. Encourage children to join a Chess
Club.
