Preliminary Task

In the preliminary task we had to create a short clip, to practice the skills that we would need when
filming our actual two minute sequences. We had to include match on action and over the shoulder
and we also had to make sure that we didn't break the 180 degree rule.
We had to refilm three times before we could officially submit our preliminary film. The reason we
had to refilm the first time was because the acting was poor also the camera was picking up
background noise i.e. other peoples conversation throughout filming meaning we could not hear the
dialogue that was shared between the characters.
The reason why we had to refilm the second time was because when filming in the over the shoulder
parts we filmed on the wrong shoulder which broke the 180 degree rule. However apart from this
the acting was good and there was no excess ambient noise. After this we refilmed for the third and
final time and we were able to recall on past experience from the other two filming session and film
without any problems. Overall I believe filming was successful as we were able to learn the
challenges of filming and are now better prepared for filming for our main project.
I was the editor and was in charge of putting all the footage together, I learned the importance to
going through all the footage before editing so I am able to spot problems like the 180 degree rule
being broken. If I edited this and showed are teacher it would waste time and delay refilming which
affects the rest of the work from being completed. Also as an editor I learned the importance of
communicating with the rest of the group throughout the process keeping them well informed if
there is any problems and also helps to gain feed back as I edit speeding up the process of editing.
Also by going through all the footage before editing I am able to organise the footage between what
I like and what I dislike which speeds up the process.
I learnt how to log and capture on final cut pro, this process was quite straight forward and I learnt
to go back a few seconds on each clip to prevent loss and corruption of footage. On the third time
filming we used a DSLR which required an SD card instead of a tape this meant the log and capture
process was not needed. This meant after the footage was uploaded I did not need to spilt the
footage as it was automatically done while filming. This was a more preferable technique and is a
factor to think about when we film is actual project. I now feel better prepared for filming our
project and feel that I can apply all skills learned from this task and increase the chance of success.
