national leaders for national liberation of parts of Serbia in the second half of the
nineteenth century.
Jevta Popovi (in some places noted Jefta) was born on 13th of November in
1823 in village of Babine, near Prijepolje. He was a son of Filip, the priest and
mother Ruica who was a housewife. He grew up in a big old, wealthy and prominent family cooperative that has provided a large number of priests and national
benefactors.
For years he was a pastor in several churches in Polimlje region, tireless worker
for the improvement of agriculture, driving force for creating better life conditions
of his compatriots, the initiator and one of the organizers of Turkish mistreatment
resistance. His attitude and hard work gained him esteemed reputation, known not
only to his parishioners, but also more broadly.
He was one of the organizers and a leader of well known Babine mutiny. After
its failure, he fled to Serbia. Although he has done enough on preparation and
organization of this rebellion, he did not have enough knowledge and experience,
manpower and weaponry to stand against far more numerous, better-organized and
technically superior Turkish army. When the uprising broke out in Bosnia and
Herzegovina in 1875, Serbian government paid special attention to the militarypolitical situation in that part of Western Serbia, and decided to help" the rebels,
but even that was not enough.

Seventy years has passed since Stevan Borota and Josif Majer, military and
political leaders of Posavina and Tamnava Partisan Detachment of National Liberation Army were hanged in front of five thousand people. Quisling magazines, like
Novo vreme (New times), Obnova (Renewal) and Naa Borba (Our struggle) wrote
frequently about them, especially in the winter of 1941/42, when many soldiers of
Posavina, Tamnava, Kosmaj, Mava (Podrinje), Suvoborski and Valjevo partisan
detachments died in the unequal fight against the German army forces, which had
help from many chetniks of Draa Mihailovi and Kosta Peanac. A large number of
soldiers were killed or captured and later, after horrible torture, were taken to the
prison camps or shot. Among captured men were Stevan Borota and Josif Majer.
Many conflicting stories circled around Valjevo region and its surroundings. In
accordance with the order of the German army forces, they were hanged on 27th of
March, 1942 at the public fairground in Valjevo. After the Second World War, both
were awarded with highest army decorations.

Summary
The paper elaborates on local conflicts with supporters - members of Yugoslav
Communist Party who were undecided in their attitude towards Cominform
Resolution brought in July, 1948.
Tito`s decisive no to Cominform Resolution had far-reaching effect on
further development of internal and international politics. However, we should keep
in mind that Communist Party in Yugoslavia was considered to be a revolutionary
center on Balkans and that Tito`s relationship with Stalin would be better described
with word partnership, then with word subordination. This also reflected on the
relationship between Yugoslav Communist Party and Central Committee of the
Communist Party of the Soviet Union, where often just information were asked, not
actual approvals. This attitude strengthened the trust in the validity of Yugoslav
Communist Party stands and had an immense effect on the authoritarian system,
making one-party government system more strong. It was clearly stated to all
members of the party that no one is allowed to confront decisions made by the Party
leadership, and that such behavior would be severely reprehended and treated with
punishment such as expulsion from the party, job or reputation loss, or even
imprisonment on the islands of Adriatic sea Goli otok and St. Grgur, which were
just two of many prison camps where disobedient members were sent.
This is also proved by the actions that were taken by Valjevo party leadership
ie. Local Committee of Serbian Communist Party and District Committee of Serbian
Communist Party in Valjevo. By the end of September, year 1948, total 8 support
rallies were held, with total of 10.691 participants, which wasmore than 2/3 of total
Valjevo population at that time and the general impression was that people are
same minded as the Party. During the rallies, Valjevo communists, as well as other
people in Valjevo, tried to emphasize the importance of Red Army in the closure of
The Second World War and that Soviet Union is the exemplary model on how to
build socialism. From 1948 to 1953, Local Committee of Serbian Communist Party
excluded 23 members, while District Committee of Serbian Communist Party
excluded 19 members, and Kruik factory management board dismissed total 24
members. However, we can assume that these data are not totally accurate, being
that it is known that some members have been revealed and punished later, or were
arrested upon their return from military service, schooling or working arrangements
located elsewhere. Many of them did their time on islands Goli otok or St. Grgur. It
is known, with certainty that Local Committee political leaders always tried talking
98
1948.
first with members that have been excluded, giving them a chance to change their
mind about the Cominform Resolution, and if these proved to be futile, then the next
step was be appropriate punishment. Generally, it was considered that Inform bureau
agents from Valjevo had very little or no influence on the other Party members.
On the international political level, Yugoslav Communist Party leadership
shown with undertaking such actions that, regardless of the strength and size of
Yugoslavia, no one could impose diplomatic or political stands. Diplomats of
Western countries expected change in the foreign political strategy of Yugoslavia,
while the Eastern bloc countries expected repentance, believing that there is no
middle road. Yugoslavia managed, similar to its geographical position, to remain
somewhere in the middle - not in the East, nor in the West - forming and mobilizing
countries of the Third world during 60s into Non-Aligned Movement.

Summary
The Serbian historiography has formed an opinion that Milo Obili origins
from Western Seria, that is, to be precise from Valjevo region. This idea was widely accepted from some historians and authors of numerous commercial works, most
of which were written without historical records and field information. Field work
has brought to us a completely different data. In the summer of 2008, professional
team led by Prof. Sinia Mii conducted field research in Valjevo region, with the
help of National Museum of Valjevo. The results showed that the legend of Lazars
duke does not exist in this region and that traditional stories of the area are mostly
related to the warriors of the nineteenth century.
When there is no written historical data related to some territory, or there is
very few, valuable information about the political and social life of the region can
only be gathered through field research. Most historians, unfortunately, made
enormous mistakes and were led to wrong conclusions by not using important field
research information.

Summary
Barns for storing grain are a result of constant increase in agricultural production. Before barns were developed, grain was placed in the baskets which were in
the house attics. Production volumes exceeded these storage places and a need for a
new way of storing grain appeared. Barns for storing grain are usually located in
house yards of rural households. They are found in the garden of rural households.
Barns are divided into four sections that can be accessed through the gable and through roof space, while grain is poured from above into bulkheads. These buildings
are sized according to the expected production of rural households. Barns are based
on four corner stones. In correspondence to their construction, barns can be grouped
into objects made of planks which are bonded on angles and objects which have
wooden base skeleton, filled with planks. Roof is usually constructed on three waters and covered with shingles or stone slabs.

Summary
Tamnava people massively participated in the liberation wars from 1912
to1918. Many of them were brave and fearless fighters, so it is not unusual that they
received public acclaim, awards and other recognitions. In addition to numerous
medals for military service, diligent service and courage, dozens of them received
several national and international awards.
Of course, the most important among those is the medal of Karaores star
with swords. In that period, that highest war decoration was awarded to a total of 26
Tamnava heroes, including Dragomir oli. Dragomir oli is not mentioned as a
bearer of this medal in published lists so far, but he can be found as one in other
historical sources. Among the decorated heroes were two brothers Marko and
Milorad irilovi from the village of Novak. From all of the men who received this
medal, only four were given the officers decoration, while the remaining 22
received military decoration of Karaores star with swords. Two of the officers
were even awarded with two of this high ranked decoration. However, we should
keep in mind that acclaimed chetnik and major of Serbian army Vojislav Voja
Tankosi had two Karaores stars, one with and one without swords, while
Milorad irilovi received two medals, and both of those were Karaores star with
swords.
Regardless of this, one might say, impressive number of decorated men, it
should not be ruled out that there are more men who received this medal also. In
relation to this, we should keep in mind that major Mihailo Madarevi had three
medals of Karaores star with swords, but still it is unknown where he was born,
being that it was determined with certainty that he has no relative connections with
family Madarevic from the village of Bobova near Valjevo, as was thought so far,
151
and that all chances are that he was born in some other village in Tamnava County
of Valjevo District. There were claims that some other inhabitants of Tamnava from
Ub municipality had Karaores star, but we determined that is was not true and
that these claims referred to some other medals like Medal for Bravery or Memorial
medal for the withdrawal of Serbian army through Albania.
Form the total number of heroes awarded with this medal from Tamnava, only
7 of them did not survive the atrocities of the war, while 19 of them returned to their
homes. Four of those who returned died in the Second World War. Here we should
specially mention knight Aleksandar Aleksa Marti, a wealthy farmer from village
of Sovljak near Ub, for his courage in the Second World War. Most of the knights
from Tamnava who received decoration of Karaores star with swords lived same
way as they did before the First World War quietly and modestly.

Summary
Momilo Vukovi Biranin was born in Belgrade in 1911. He was the son of
general Dragoljub Vukovi and Katarina Vukovi, born Biranin. Lieutenant
Dragoljub Vukovi was one of the immediate participants in The May Overthrowing
in 1903 on King Aleksandar Obrenovi, after which he got transferred to service in
Valjevo. There he marries Katarina, great-granddaughter of Duke Ilija Biranin.
Tragic destiny of Serbia led Dragoljub to fight in the First World War. Soon after his
return from the War, his wife dies. He remains alone with three children: two
daughters and one son Momilo. Following his fathers footsteps, Momilo
Vukovi enrolls and finishes the army academy. The Second World War finds him
as Yugoslavian Air force brigade captain. As a captain, he gets captured and taken
into Italian military prisoners camp near Rome. After the capitulation of Italy, he is
being captured by the German Wehrmacht forces. He was released by the Canadian
Corps of allied military forces from Bremervrde camp, located in the northern
Germany. After the War, he remains in Europe. During one of his visits to Germany,
King Peter II invites Momilo to move to Paris, which he accepts. There he
performs the duties of kings private secretary. When the King returns to United
States, Momilo returns to Germany, to Munich, and there he marries Petronella
From. He starts publishing magazine White Eagle" and becomes its lifelong editor.
Apart from this, he starts writing and publishing books with themes related to
Serbian history and famous Serbian historical figures. He died in Munich in 1984, in
his seventy-third year. He was buried in Munich, on Nordfridhof cemetery in the
northern part of the city. Years spent in exile he lived without Yugoslavian
citizenship and he persistently denied German citizenship. Through his publishing
work, he kept his connection with homeland and that is quite enough to give him the
citizenship for which he yearned for and deserved.

Summary
Photography mainly shows events as accurately as possible, which gives it
substantial credibility as historical source. Primarily, documentary photography has
this role, but one should take some precautions when observing a photograph, due to
possible manipulations and alterations in correspondence to original. Although history uses photography in several ways, it could benefit far more from it, but in order
to do so history and historians need to change and improve their approach and
attitude towards it. Therefore it is necessary for historians to cooperate with people
who are well acquainted with photography or are masters of this trade, using the
photography history in Serbia to gain certain knowledge and obtain new information. This will help establish relationship between historical and photographic observations, enabling deeper analysis of contents and materials, which would, by reading photographs lead to new historical insights.
For further research one can use documentary photograph collections located in
museums and archives or family collections that have not yet been the subject of
special attention of historians. In order for those collections to be used as historical
source, it is necessary to apply 10 steps procedure which will lead to insights characteristic for photography as historical source: the understanding of the content,
establishing location and the time when photo was taken and the name of the photographer. This way of photograph reading can provide us with significant amount
of historical data which can help describe historical event to which the photo refers
to in more detail. Given examples show how this approach can contribute to the
study of local history.
Photographs, if available, should also be published within historical articles
and papers, but in order to do so, photographs must be properly prepared and
described. In that case, photographs should be presented with no changes or
