A Treasured Icon
1) The Statue of Liberty is a gift to the Americans. 2) Originally called "Liberty
Enlightening the World", this modern Colossus is located on the New York harbor. 3) The statue
was completed by the famous French sculptor Frdric Bartoldi as a centennial gift, in July year
1884 and arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885. 4) In 1886, when the statue was
assembled, Lady Liberty was the tallest iron structure ever built. 5) It is a gift to the United
States from the people of French, it is a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman
goddess of Freedom bearing a torch and a tablet which the date of American Declaration of
Independence, July 4, 1776 is stated. 6) A broken chain lies at her feet symbolizing the
overthrow or tyranny in the new nation. 7) There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of
the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150
pounds. 8) It is an icon of freedom and of the United States, it faces Southeast in perfect
symmetry with the placement of Fort Wood and how people would see the Statue while
entering the harbor. 9) The icons total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation
