The Statue of Liberty is a figure of Libertas, a Roman liberty goddess.

It represents the freedom that illuminates the world.

It is a female figure. She holds a torch above her head with her right hand. In her left hand
carries a plaque with the date 4 of July 1776 in Roman numerals (JULY IV MDCCLXXVI). It is the
date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. At the feet she has a broken chain as a symbol of
freedom. Wears a 7-peaked crown that represents The 7 continents and the 7 seas

The statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States

The French politician Eduardo Laboulaye had the idea that France would offer a
gift to the United States for the commemoration of the centenary of American
Independence.
It is a reminder of the long friendship between the two countries and guarantees
the Franco-American Alliance.

About 1870 Eduardo Laboulaye had the idea to offer a gift to USA. Bartholdi was hired to
design a statue, which should end in 1876, but ended 10 years later

The statue was inaugurated on October 28th, 1886.

Since its inauguration until 1902 it worked as a lighthouse

The statue was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its
metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel.

It measures 46 meters and weighs 225 tons. Stands on a pedestal of the same
height. Total measures 93 meters from the ground to the torch. • It is made of
copper and the inner frame of iron. • It has a green color by the reaction of the
copper salts.
