STATUE OF LIBERTY

SHORT STORY
The first man who proposed the idea of a monument in the United States
was Edoard de Laboulaye. After 10 years, sculptor Frederic Auguste
Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture that could be shown in
the commemoration of the centennial of the American Declaration of
independence. This statue was called LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING THE
WORLD and was an effort between America and France.
Both countries had an agreement, where the American people were to
build the pedestal, and the French were responsible for the statue and its
assembly in the U.S. But there was a problem, they had insufficient
money on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. They used several methods
to raise funds to build the monument, such as: Theatrical events, public
auctions, entertainment events, art exhibitions and even a book called
The New Colossus by Poet Emma Lazarus. They did all they could to
raise funds for the statue`s pedestal.
In order to complete the statue`s constructor, a well know engineer
Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) was commissioned
to design the massive iron pylon and secondary skeletal framework
which allows the statue`s cooper to move independently yet upright.
Back in America all the citizens were struggling to raise funds also, so
they gathered money by giving silver jewelry and their own goods to
finally see the statue in its place. In 1886, the statue was completed on
Bedloe`s island and was seen by all the people who arrived from other
countries and wanted to get to the land of freedom. Today the statue is
an international symbol of freedom and it was built among the effort of
many people from all the states.
