UTILIZATION OF MARBLE POWDER IN CONCRETE

Introduction:
Among 32 states in India, Tamilnadu has 50% of total marble reserve. Using different types
of cutting methods, marble stones are machined from the quarries and those blocks are
transported to the near by processing plants. Then the stones are industrially processed such as
sawing and polishing, finally processed stones are used for decorative purposes. When the
stone slurry is disposed in land fills, it is a non- biodegradable waste that causes pollution and
environmental damage.
Objective:
This research work is aimed to investigate the utilization of marble industry waste as a
substitute material for fine/ natural aggregate in concrete production.
Methodology:
Marble waste is used as a substitute instead of river sand with the substitution rate of
0%,5%,10%,15% and 20%, tests such as slump test for fresh concrete, compressive strength test
split tensile strength test, flextural strength test and ultra sonic pulse velocity(UPV) test are to
be performed for 7,28 and 90 days for hardening concrete. In addition flexural behavior of the
reinforced marble powder concrete is also to be evaluated in order to understand the structural
behavior of marble concrete at the structural member scale.

Materials to be used:
1 .Portland cement and aggregate
O.P.C. 53 grade confirming to IS 8112-1989 will be used in this study.
Maximum size of the aggregate to be used will be 20mm.
2 .Marble powder
Marble powder which is a by- product obtained from marble processing industry will be used in
this study.
3. Concrete
The concrete mix proportion will be designed by IS method
Description of mixture:
Among the 6 mixtures, five mixtures will be prepared with natural sand substituted by marble
waste as percentage and the remaining one will be controlled mixture (CM)
Significance of study:
Due to the unavailability of natural sand now- a days this research will be definitely of use for
the construction work by using marble waste. These marble wastes are available freely without
any cost. So, cost of construction may be reduced.
