Retailers
celebrate bumper
December trade
by FRANCISCO CORTEZ
Palma.Clothing retailers
in Majorca marked December 2014 as the best month
in terms of sales and visiting customers since the beginning of the recession.
The main reasons behind
last months figures were,
according to Pimeco, the
entity that overseas small
and medium businesses in
the region, the relentless
promotion campaigns and
discounts offered by retailers before the January sales
officially started.
The sudden drop in temperature last month also
helped boost sales.
Summer was a particularly
long season which affected
autumn and winter clothes
sales.

When temperatures suddenly dropped in December, many Majorcan residents and visitors headed to
the shops to complement
their winter wardrobe, taking December sales figures
to new record levels.
Pimeco revealed yesterday that small and medium
businesses in the sector valued December 2014 with a
5.6 mark out of 10, the best
figure in over six years and
almost a point over the average in the whole year (4.8
out of 10).
In terms of perception
sales, 62 percent of business owners felt they sold
more than during the same
month last year, while 26
percent felt they sold
around the same amount.
A total of 12 percent said

they felt their sales had actually gone down.

Comparing November
2013 with November 2012,
64 percent of shop owners
felt their sales were also
better, 28 percent remained around the same
level and 12 percent felt
sales declined.
Despite Decembers surge
for most retailers, Pimeco
warned that last month
was unusual and should
not be seen as a sign that
the sector has recovered.
Autumn was a particularly
warm month last year,
which left business owners
with no option but to offer
aggressive sales campaigns in December hoping to make up for the poor
results the two previous
months.
