United nations joint efforts

to bring pipe organ to Palma
b Santa Teresetas Parish in Palma has a new full mechanical pipe organ. It was
made in Germany, stationed in Sweden and brought over to Majorca by a group of
Poles... driving a van owned and rented by an Englishman.
It took a truly international effort to bring
Santa Teresetas Parish
in Palma a new full mechanical pipe organ
from Sweden this
week.
by FRANCISCO CORTEZ
Palma.The roughly 600
kilo keyboard instrument,
comprising of two manuals
and one pedal, was made in
Germany 51 years ago and
taken to Malmo Cathedral
shortly after, where it has
been ever since.
Until last Thursday.
Ruth Albrecht, a German
resident on Majorca for 25
years, who studied playing
the organ at the Majorcan
music conservatory had
been trying to find a parish
on the island that would allow her and future conservatory students to practice
on a regular basis, a petition
that was constantly denied.
Until she contacted Santa
Teresetas Parish.
They agreed that should
she find an organ, where
both she and future students could occasionally
practice there.
After speaking with
churches throughout
Europe, and almost losing
hope, a response finally
came from Malmo.
The local church was getting a new organ, and they
were willing to donate
their old one to the Majorcan parish.

organ weighs around 600 kilogrames and was built 51 years ago. PHOTOS: F.CORTEZ
Enters Anders Sallstrom,
an organ builder originally
from Lund, Sweden and the
man who helped disassemble the 492 pipe instrument, refurbish it at his
workshop, and agreed to fly
over to Majorca last week to
reassemble it.
It seemed like transporting the organ was now the
last hurdle to clear before
Ruths dream finally came
true.
Enter English man with a
van.
After researching for possible alternatives on how to
bring the musical instrument over to Majorca, Ruth

found an English man with

a van that agreed to bring it
over. But he wouldnt do it
himself.

Enter the Poles. A Polish

removal company decided
to rent the van, make the
four-day drive from Malmo

to Palma, and deliver the organ intact.

It took, eight strong men
and a momentous effort to
get it out of the van and inside Santa Teresetas Parish
church.
Sallstrom was yesterday
morning reassembling the
last few pieces and giving it
the final touch under the
expectant eye of Ruth, who
could barely believe the
wait is finally over.
An organ like this would
cost 160,000 euros if it was
built today. We got it for a
symbolic 150 euros, plus

roughly 9,000 for the transport and refurbishment.

It s a true gift for us. One
of the conditions I insisted
on was that we (herself and
the conservatory students)
could practice and the local
pastor, who is as excited as
we are, has agreed to that.
We are hoping to have a
student concert here sometime over the next two
weeks.
Both Ruth and Anders
told the Bulletin yesterday
that the organ should be
ready for his Palma debut
tomorrow.
