Application Explication
Name of the Strategy: Anticipation Guide
B-D-A/W? This strategy can be used before and after a student completes a reading. It works as
a before activity because it begins to prime the students brains and foreshadow to the events of
the text. It can also give them an idea of the different themes that might occur in the text so that
they will be fresh in their brain when the student does the reading. In conjunction with this, it
will also activate the prior knowledge of the student so they can begin to form connections. This
strategy can also work as an after strategy because it can assess what a student has taken from the
reading and whether or not he or she has discovered the key points in the text. It can also
demonstrate whether a student has applied his or her prior knowledge to the text.
Verb Blurb: The student will have the opportunity to begin thinking about the prior knowledge
that they may have on the topic of the text before they begin to read. They will also have a
stronger concept of the text if they have used that prior knowledge to make connections that will
increase their learning. They will ultimately get more out of the text through the connections that
they can form between the new material in the text and the prior knowledge that they may have.
Students will also have the ability to better comprehend the key ideas or themes of a text if the
anticipation guide primes them before they read it.
