Homework 2
Due Friday, September 12

1. A rectangular section of a river has a discharge of 30m3/s where the cross section
is 12m wide and 1.25m deep. Downstream, at another cross section, the river is 9m
wide and the same depth, but the velocity increases by 10%. Assuming steady,
incompressible flow, what is the net change in storage between the cross sections in
a 30 minute period of time?

2. The x-component of a 2-D velocity field is given by ! = sin /2 . What is the
y-component of the velocity, ! , if the flow is steady-state and the fluid is
incompressible?

3. Water flows through a cylindrical pipe with a discharge of 0.1m3/s as shown
below. Find the average velocity at the control surfaces A and B, then plot (by hand)
the distribution of the mass flux along surface B. Assume that the velocity at the
control surfaces is parallel to the long axis of the pipe (the solid black arrow) and
use = 125! .

4. The face of a 100m wide rectangular dam is built at an angle of 60 degrees above
the horizontal and holds back a body of fresh water that is 30m deep at the face of
the dam. Assuming hydrostatic conditions, what angle would be needed in order for
an equivalent body of salt water to exert the same force on the dam? Assume the
density of fresh water to be 1000kg/m3 and the density of salt water to be
1030kg/m3.
