FECHA: 14 (Grupo B1) and 15 (Grupo A1) of Aphril 2020
SUBJECT TOPICS: Applications of specific energy equation, Momentum Equation, critical flow and hydraulic jump
in channels
DEADLINE: 16 and 17 of Aphril, at class time

WORKSHOP No. 2
1. A rectangular channel with a bottom width of 4m, carries a discharge with a velocity of 1,3m/s and with a
normal depth 1,4 m. A) Find the change in depth and in the absolute water level produced by a smooth upward
step of 0,17m in the channel bed downstream of the section considered. B) A smooth downward step of 0,17m
in the channel bed downstream of the section considered. C) Find the maximum allowable size of the upward
step in order the flow to be possible and do not change its characteristics
2. A circular channel of 6m., in diameter has a critical depth of 2,81 m. Determine the critical discharge
3. A circular channel of 5 m. in diameter carries a discharge of 10,8 m3/s. Determine the critical depth using two
different methods
4. A circular channel with 3m diameter carries a discharge of 3m 3/s. If the depth at the center of channel section is
1,2m. Determines the state of flow in the section. Determines critical depth and the minimum energy in the
section.
5. If the slope of a trapezoidal channel 5 m wide at the bottom that leads 35 m3 / s of water discharge is z = 2 and
it is varied to z = 3, how much does the critical depth and Energy vary? Determine the average critical velocity in
the channel section for each case. Calculates the specific forces (Fe) and determines the % of variation.
6. A channel is rectangular, 5m wide, Q= 10 m3/s and velocity 1,3 m/s. If the width at the bottom of the section is
changed to 4m, in which percentage does the critical depth and Specific Energy vary.
7. A wide crested weir of 0,8 m high is built on a rectangular channel 5m wide. If the depth measured on the crest
of the structure is 1,0m and it corresponds to the critical depth, calculate the flow discharge and the depth
upstream of the structure, assuming there are no significant energy losses in between the channel sections.
8. A horizontal channel of rectangular section 6 m wide carries a flow of 20 m3/s with a depth of 1,29m. If there is
a vertical step (abrupt descent of the bottom) of 0,30m high downstream of the section of the channel
considered, calculate the force exerted by the water on the vertical face of the step and indicate its direction
(Towards upstream or downstream). What happens to the force if the depth y 2 downstream the step is LESS
than the height of the step?
9. Calculate the force exerted on the vertical upstream face of a rectangular wide crested weir 0,5 m high placed in
a smooth horizontal bottom channel 3m wide that carries a flow of 7 m3 / s with a depth of 1,5m, if the depth
on the crest is the critical. What happens to the force on the vertical wall if the depth on the weir is greater than
the critical depth?
10. Calculate the force exerted on the upstream vertical face of a sliding gate placed in a rectangular channel with a
horizontal smooth bottom, 4m width that carries a flow rate of 7 m3/s with a depth of 1,5m upstream of the
gate, if the opening of the gate is 0,6m and the depth of the water downstream of the gate is the critical.
11. A horizontal channel of rectangular section 4m wide carries a flow of 7 m3/s, if there is a sliding vertical gate in
the center of the channel with an opening that generates a depth of 0.3m downstream of the gate and with
conditions at the end of the channel such that a hydraulic jump is produced, determines the conjugate
downstream depth of the jump, assuming parallel flow in the two sections and the Froude numbers. Calculate
the energy lost in the local phenomenon and the critical depth.
12. A horizontal rectangular channel 3 m wide, conducts a discharge of 10 m 3/s. If a hydraulic jump occurs in the
channel with a depth of 0,40m upstream of the jump, calculate: A) the conjugate depth downstream of the jump
and the specific energy lost by the local phenomenon. B) Determine the corresponding Froude numbers. C)
Classify the type of jump presented in the channel and determines its length. D) Calculate the power lost by the
jump. E) Calculate the specific forces upstream and downstream the jump.
