Class 1 102 Curriculum

Reading
It is important for children to experience reading independently, in small groups, and with the
whole class.

Independent Reading
Independent reading occurs each day. It is tailored to meet your childs needs as a reader. They
read just-right books, which they choose on their own according to their reading level.

Guided Reading
This is small group instructional time where children are grouped according to their level. This
is designed to bring young readers to a level of independence.

Shared Reading
Entire class gathers on the rug to read big books, charts, or transparencies. This is where
children begin to develop skills and strategies for reading.

Writers Workshop
Children write daily on topics they choose. The writing process consists of: rehearsing, drafting,
revising, editing, and publishing with a celebration.

Math Workshop
We use the TERC program. Students spend time exploring mathematical problems. They work
independently, in pairs, in groups, as well as a class. Games and the use of manipulatives (i.e.
blocks, cards, etc) are used to invent strategies and solve problems.

Social Studies
We will focus on family, neighborhood, community, and citizenship. Your child will be introduced
to the concept of maps.

Science

Personal health diet and hygiene
