Fire News Report 1/27/15 Allston fire injures seven, displaces 60 A nine-alarm fire at an Allston apartment building left seven people injured and 60 residents displaced. The fire began on the rear porch of the third story of the building at 5:30pm on Wednesday. The apartment building was located at 8 Harvard Square, Allston MA. Boston Firefighters responded to the fire and closed off the area surrounding the building, including Brighton Avenue and Harvard Avenue. The fire was put out by 7:30pm. A total of seven people were injured, including five firefighters and two bystanders. No one inside the building at the time of the fire was injured. The firefighters injuries were due to a collapse of a staircase inside the building. The bystanders suffered injury from smoke inhalation as a result of standing in close proximity of the scene. A total of 60 residents were displaced. Eight of these residents were students at Boston University. Housing assistance has been offered to the students by the university. The Red Cross has also set up shelters for the residents at Jackson/Mann K-8 School in Allston, MA. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There was an estimated two million dollars worth of damage to the building. The building commissioner plans to visit the site Thursday to determine its safety.
