President Lincoln Pronounced Dead, Andrew Johnson Sworn in as New

President
BOSTONPresident Lincoln died at 7:22 this morning as a result
of injuries suffered from last nights shooting at the Ford Theater. Vice
President Andrew Johnson has been sworn in as the new president of the
United States. President Lincolns body was removed to the Executive
Mansion at 9:30am.
A hat left behind by the assassin at the theater as been found. The
hat belongs to John Wilkes Booth, who was previously speculated to be
the shooter. This new evidence confirms that he was the assassin who
shot President Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln in his
temporal lobe while he was sitting in his box at the production of
American Cousin at the Ford Theater. Booth was an actor who played
at the theater in the past. He knew all of the entrances and exits of the
building. This made his assassination plan and immediate exit from the
play successful. His whereabouts are still unknown. Booth was last seen
riding away from the theater.
Washington remains closed off as the search for the assassin
continues. Every road leading out of the city is picketed and all avenue
escapes are blocked. Steamboats have been prohibited from departing
the Potomac River. There are currently no shipments leaving the city.
The injuries that Lincoln suffered were fatal. As of midnight,
doctors doubted he would survive. He died this morning after a night of
fighting for his life. The body President Lincoln was removed to the
Executive Mansion in a hearse, wrapped in an American flag. A guard of
cavalry escorted the traveling hearse with military officials following on
foot.
Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in as President of the
United States this morning. According to Edwin B. Stanton, Secretary of

War, Johnson was sworn in soon after Lincolns Cabinet was informed
of his death. Andrew Johnson was sworn into presidency by Salmon P.
Chase, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. President Johnson has
decided to retain the Cabinet as is.
At noon, President Johnson met with the Cabinet at the Treasury
Building to make arrangements for Lincolns funeral. Details about the
ceremonies have not been made public.
Secretary of State Steward also received injuries last night in his
home. This attached occurred almost simultaneously as Lincoln was
shot. Steward is no longer able to perform his duties due to the injuries
he suffered. As a result, William Hunter has been appointed as acting
Secretary of State.
