Fall Semester 2014

Instructor: Andreas Stavridis

Due Date: 09/18/2013

Note: For all problems provide neat drawings of strains and stresses and show clearly all calculations.
1. A beam with the following cross section is constructed with concrete of compressive strength of
5,000 psi and three #7 reinforcing steel bars with yield strength of 60 ksi.
a. Find the cracking moment.
b. Find the stress distribution and maximum stresses in concrete and steel right after
cracking.
c. Find the maximum stresses in concrete and steel due to a moment of 25 ft-kips.
d. Find the maximum stresses in concrete and steel due to a moment of 50 ft-kips.
e. Find the maximum stresses in concrete and steel due to a moment of 75 ft-kips.
f. What do you observe as the applied moment increases?

2. For the following sections assume concrete of compressive strength of 4,000 psi and reinforcing
steel bars with yield strength of 60 ksi to calculate
a. the moment of inertia of the transformed section
b. the cracking moment
c. the stresses in the steel and concrete right after cracking
d. the stresses in the steel and concrete when the moment is 50% of the cracking moment
e. the stresses in the steel and concrete when the moment is 150% of the cracking
moment
f. would the cracking moment be the same for positive and negative moments? Justify
your answer.

3. For the following beam assume concrete of compressive strength of 4,000 psi and density of 150
lbs/ft3 and reinforcing steel bars with yield strength of 60 ksi to
a. examine if it cracks under its self weight
b. if not, estimate the maximum load P, the beam can carry without cracking.
c. If yes, estimate the minimum support that needs to be provided in the middle of the
span so that the beak does not crack.
