System Hazard and Mitigation Plan

Hazard:

Power shortage (<75kw) induced by damage to

solar arrays by space debris
Designed Mitigation Plan

1)If power drops below 75kw, distribution control software is

enabled in order to prioritize loads and power usage.

2)Lower priority power users will be turned off (disabled) in order

to continue providing power to highest priority users.

Verification Testing

1) Initiate full-scale power generation

2) Disable 1 of the 4 arrays in order to reduce power to 60kw.
3) Power distribution software will be verified in pass/fail test
4) Test repeated with 2 arrays disabled
3

Testing Hazard
Verification Event: Power distribution pass/fail test
Hazard: Power disconnection device fails to break circuit during
power shortage logic test
Causal Factors

1) Overheating
2) Supplier failure to verify test equipment
3) FOD

Mitigation Plan

Effects

1)All 4 arrays have independently operating devices.

2)Test can be alternatively performed with through manual disconnection
1) Test delay
2) Safety risk to person performing manual disconnection
3) Equipment damage due to human error

System Hazard Mitigation

Risks
Cost Risk:

Reduction in power generation

capabilities results in unplanned storage of spares
costs and potential implementation costs.
Mitigation Plan

1)Propose budget increase in yearly budget planning

meetings

a) Storage facility construction

b)Missions to add arrays

2) Propose budget increase in order to repair original

arrays.

Update: Budget approved and allocated

Contingency Plan

1)Use funds allocated as other for unplanned costs.
