Air Change Load

Q = m (ho - h i)
where;
Q = Air change load (kilowatt)
m = mass of air entering space (kilograms
per second)
ho = enthalpy of outside air (kilojoules per
kilogram)
hi enthalpy of inside air (kilojoules per
kilogram)

Air quantities are usually given in units of

volume rather than in units of mass to facilitate
calculations the heat gain per liters of outside air
entering the space listed in table 10-6A and 106B.
To determine the air change load in kilowatts,
multiply the air infiltration rate in liters per
second by the appropriate enthalpy change from
table 10-6A and 10-6B.

Example
A storage cooler has outside dimensions
of 4m x 5m x 3m high. The outside
temperature is 25 C and the RH is50%.
The inside cooler is maintained at 2 C and
usage is average. The wall of the cooler
are approximately 150mm thick. Calculate
the air change load in kilowatts

Solution
Wall cooler 150mm thick
Inside dimensions of cooler less 0.3 m with o/side
dimensions.
So inside volume (3.7 m x 4.7 m x2.7 m) = 47 m3.
From table 10.7 the infiltration rate for inside volume
47m3 is 7.3 L/s
From table 10-6A the air change factor is found 0.0451
kJ/L
Air change load = (7.3 L/s) (0.0451 kJ/L = 0.329 kW
