Introduction

Stability of Equilibrium: A system is said to be in a state of equilibrium

if, for all possible geometrically admissible small displacements from
the equilibrium configuration, restoring forces arise which tend to
accelerate the system back toward the equilibrium position.

Elastic Stability

The pair of springs exerts a total force 2kx which

has a restoring torque of 2kxL about B.
P = 2kL as the critical load or the Buckling load.

Transverse displacement x due to load eccentricity

Pcrit = 2kL
