3D Holographic Projection Technology in

smartphones

Holography is a technique which enables three-dimensional images

(holograms) to be made. It involves the use of a laser, interference,
diffraction, light intensity recording and suitable illumination of the recording. The
image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in
exactly the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the image
appear three-dimensional. The holographic recording itself is not an image; it consists
of an apparently random structure of varying intensity, density or profile.
Earlier the mobile phones were used only for texting and calling. Then there comes
the smartphones with internet and some camera functionalities. Even nowadays these
smart phones can be converted into microscope by adding some lens to magnify
objects. Ostendo Technologies Inc. has spent the past nine years quietly working on
miniature projectors designed to emit crisp videos and glasses-free 3-D images for
smartphones and giant screens.
The vision of California-based startup Ostendo Technologies is to buy a new model
smart phone with a holographic projector inside. It has been hard at work creating
projectors small enough to be used in a mobile device. A single chip, being the size of
a Tic Tac, can project a 48-inch video image on to any surface, but the really exiting
tech will come after the 2D model. By stringing multiple chips together, a larger,
higher resolution, 3D image could be projected into space. An advanced computer
chip capable of projecting three-dimensional holograms from a smartphone has been
developed by computer scientists, designed to display videos and images without the
need for 3D glasses. During a recent test reviewed by The Wall Street Journal,
Ostendo showed a working prototype: a set of six chips laid together that beamed a
3-D image of green dice spinning in the air. The image and motion appeared
consistent, irrespective of the position of the viewer.
