ENERGY MANAGEMENT

2nd ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT 02b
The crystal production develops along several steps, each processed within a group of
production sectors as follows:
1. Composition
2. Fusion
3. Conformation
4. Reheat
5. Polish
6. Decoration
7. Packing
Main flows associated with the crystal production process with internal recycling are
schematically identified in the annex 1 (System diagram), while annual energy consumption
(electricity and propane) and annual average production for each of this production sectors are
given in annex 2 (Data).
Considering that the main raw material used to produce the glass is sand, where the energy
consumption associated to the sand transport is ~ 20 MJ/ton of sand, and that the internal
recycling process is not being applied*, determine the following:
a) Determine the expression to calculate the specific consumption of the final product.
b) Determine the specific energy consumption associated to each sub product, residues
treatment and final product.
c) Is the recycling process reasonable in terms of energy consumption? Determine the
threshold value of the specific energy consumption for the recycled products.
d) Is this company obliged to fulfill the SGCIE? If so, determine the energy intensity target
(based on the specific energy consumption) according to the SGCIE.
NOTE: use primary energy for all specific energy consumptions.
* Some data given in annex 2 must be adapted to accommodate the process without recycling!
